I'm considering taking out a 4 speed manual Muncie from my first Gen and putting in a Powre glide or maybe a TH350, is it pretty streight forward? Or does anything need altering (apart from shifter linkage and clutch obviously) Any advice apreciated, thanks. Russ. |

provided you get a pedal box from an auto, it's an easy swap, .....i went from a T10 manual 4 speed to a th350 in my old 1978 Z28, piece of piss really. The question i want to ask is.......WHY ?????? |

Ease of drive, bit quicker, better mpg, all that I guess, (perhaps not the last), but as its got 4:11 gears in the back end with 10x15's its racin its nuts off at 60 - 70. Open to advice, just want to get the revs down a bit at 60 - 70 without swapping the diff / axle, love the launch!! |

changing to an auto won't lower the cruising revs, if you have 4.11 gears in the axle, you will be in top gear with either box (1:1 drive)if you dont want to change the diff, and are determined to get an auto box, try a late model one with on overdriven top gear.......better yet , if you are prepared to change the box, put in a 5 speed (or even a 6 speed) from a corvette or late model camaro, as 4th gear will be 1:1 drive, with 5th and 6th being overdriven, thus lowering the revs. The advantage of this swap is that you dont have to mess with the cars history too much. |

Putting in a 5 speed manual would be the way to go, you'll get the best of all worlds then.. !!! |

Quote: Would a 5 or 6 speed fit streight in? If so what year vetts am i looking for. Thanks for that there aint no substitute for knowledge. Russ. most 3rd gens, and i believe 4th gens use the t5, the 6 speed is 4th gen onwards. I don't know how straightforward the 6 speed would be to swap in though |

You need to consider what engine you have and what sort of power/torque you will subject the gearbox to, and how you drive the car. If it's fairly standard (and I get that impression from you wanting to keep the Muncie), then a T5 should be ok. The next problem you may have, as mentioned, is the shifter location, which could mean cutting another hole in the tunnel. With an auto, you just need a hole for the shifter cable, which is less intrusive, and a change to the shifter insert of the centre console (if you have one). How about an overdrive unit for the Muncie? They are expensive, but could be an easier solution: http://www.gearvendors.com and as already said, manual to auto - WHY? If you are set on going auto, I have a TH350 I'm looking to get rid of soon (as I'm converting to manual - ) Forget going for a Powerglide, just not enough gears - great for drag racing though! |
