Picture the scene - me, 3 girls, into the car for an afternoon next to a river watching a dragon boat race.
Decide to back the car back slightly further into the space, went to start her up again (after a couple of minutes while I went to the Pay in Dismay machine) and there's a bit of churning, but no starting.
It didn't sound like a dead battery (I'd had her on charge only 7 days before, but I hadn't used her all week), so thinking that something more major had gone wrong, I called the recovery truck out.
He puts a booster pack on the battery terminals, and of course, she bursts into life.
Voltmeter shows about 12.5v across the battery with the engine running.
So - given that I have an indicator that's quite slow, three dials (fuel, temperature and volts) that bounce about or read apparently randomly (volts) - and will tick in time with the slow indicator - I'm wondering what's up with the electrics.
Something like a bad earth?
Had a bit of a look tonight, and the negative strap goes to the engine block, and there's a brown tail that's connected to the inner wing just near the battery.

If it's a bad earth further up the loom near the dash, where should I be hunting?

Cheers!

I will try and get a pcik for you tonight, but heres an awful attempt to explain: if you sit in the car and put your left hand on the steering wheel and move it a few inches down just below the indicator stalk , if you pretend the dash wasn't there you'd see a metal brace that goes from the steering column to the left side of the dorr jamb, near the air vent. on the back of that metal is a ground. that maybe it (this is the main ground that comes off thr main wiring loom on the inside of the car. It's a b*tch to get to, i'll upload pics tonight though. let me know how you get on or if thats helpful. my whole dash was on the blink, lights and all etc and this terminal was corroded. Also, what's the battery condition like? p.s - any of those girls single ;)

Cool, thanks for the description. I'm off on Wednesday, so I guess I'll be spending some time on my back, with a torch and a spanner.

Ah, just realised you have a 3rd gen! let's hope gm kept things similar. Either way, it should be in the rough area. in the pic, see where the blue terminalled wire is? just to left a bit you can see a sheet metal screw poking through. attached to that on the other side is that gauge cluster ground. good luck, and enjoy the back pain!

Cheers guys,
Well, she's in the garage for the valve stem seals to be done. So until she's back I can't have a poke about. Funny thing is she's been fine for the last three days.
