Hi all,

Long story short, need to repaint the cowel but ran out of black chasis paint that i used before. I have some matt black Wickes rattle can spray and i wonder if this will be ok to use, my main concern is that the window will be stuck to this so it's the last place i would want paint failure. I know Eastwood do chasis / all round paint in a rattle can too, so the stuff can't be too bad... can it? The cowel is still black, it's just been sanded down so it's not bare metal.

Here's what i have and think of using:

http://www.wickes.co.uk/matt-metal-spra ... vt/163099/

Here's what makes me think a rattle can will work for this job (relatively small area being painted)

thanks for your thoughts!

Cheers,

Ray

Hi Ray i shouldnt think that there would be a problem with the paint, just make sure the area to be painted is realy well degreased (i would be tempted to put the can in hot water after a good shaking ) before painting ,Ch  eers Neil PS the only other thing is i would prefer satin rather than matt just think it looks better 8-)

Since you live in such a rust-prone climate, might I suggest using POR-15? The acronym means "Paint-Over-Rust", but there doesn't have to be rust to use it. I did the interior floorpan, trunk, cowl, firewall and entire undercarriage with this stuff, and it is very, very tough. It's not exactly cheap, but if you do the prep correctly, it will last the life of the vehicle. You can spray it if you want to, but it's not necessary. It has self-leveling properties and can be applied with a brush. That was the method I used and you can't see a single brush stroke. Check them out at www.por15.com

Just to let you know the outcome, i ended up having to go to the paint store in the end anyway so got some 2pack mixed up at 50 / 50 matt, so should come out a satin effect - we hope! pics when it's done :)

Did this work ok Ray, as sometimes even with a 50/50 mix with matting agent it still looks somewhat glossy. Top overcome this, paint it as normal & then once it's tacked off, just dust the paint on lightly to give a nice satin finish hth

cheers...Nige

Hey Nige,

Not yet, tonight if i leave work in time :)

Ended up redoing the door as it wasn't straight so spent the whole weekend doing that. ye - it was extremely painful.

I actually used that dusting technique originally on the cowel with full gloss paint - it came out exactly how i wanted - have pics at home. I even did the same thing on the under side of the hood, painted it with a couple of good layers, then laid down another couple of dust coats and it's perfect :)

Annoyingly on the cowel it came out really nice - varied the amount of thinner (minimal), increased air pressure and reduced flow from the pot and got a really nice textured finised like you get on a ferrari rocker cover, only in black. i have pics again at home. but oh well, tonight will see how this 50/50 works out.

Cheers for the tip and good to see your online again :)

This is apparently a 50/50 mix with 50 being black and 50 being matting agent. I shook the bejesus out of the tin as apparentyl matting agent is heavier and therefore sits at the bottom of the tin. but really? also have lots of little spots all over the cowel. fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu

Mmm, I thought it might look like that, 2pk even with matting agent tries to gloss up. Personally, I'd be inclined to flat out the little spots, along with the rest of it & just dust the paint on very lightly hth

cheers...Nige

I always use a matt clear over any colour to make it satin so its easy to whipe down but leaves that satin look. I will sort out some pics for you later.

Cheers guys, good ideas there!

Rocky i like the idea of matted clear, unfortunately though i'm not using clear coat on the car but i would like to see how you did yours, share some pics when you can :)

Nige, thanks for the tip, funny how 2k glosses out, but good overall characteristic as it's what you want most of the time. The plan tonight then is to hit it with p1000 to knock down the spots then lay down a few dust layers to matte it out.

Could the spots be air bubbles? i usually clean and degrease surfaces pretty thoroughly and tack cloth the surface so i don't think it could contamination?

Cheers!

Pics coming tonight :)
