Post subject:  What Holley Carb do I have & header clearance

What Holley carb do I have here on my 350 please? Seems to be leaking around the accelerator pump / front of the carb somewhere so before I try and take it apart I'd like to get a service kit or similar. Engine ticks over OK but on trying to accelerate it feels like its only firing on four cylinders and the whole car is shaking itself to bits!!

Also is this a standard header plug gap clearance? It was so close that the rubber plug gap burnt to a crisp! Header has a dent in it to clear the plug cap, but even so it seems a crap design? Even now though the spark won't arc to the header as I thought that might have been the reason for a misfire but seems not...

Hi dont know what your carb is but if you have a good look around your carb you should find numbers on that should id the carb (you may need a magnifying glass )take all numbers and you should get a carb rebuild kit no bother as for your headers they are realy close to plugs do you weld or know some one who can weld as i would take out plug grind (diegrind)a slot and weld in a piece of tube for clearance ,stuff rag into your plug hole before grinding hope this helps Cheers Neil :thumbup: PS just checked out your location your juuuuuust a bit toooooo far away from me otherwise i would have helped once again Cheers

Not sure about 1st gens, but all the 2nd gen camaro headers I've seen have a dent like that to provide plug clearance..

That does look awfully close those though, and no insulation around the plug would bother me greatly, even though you say it's not arc-ing..

As Neil has said, take a look at the choke horn & there'll be a couple of numbers "stamped" in it. It looks like an 1850 series 600 cfm Vac Secondaries carb.

As to the plugs, Accel do a short header plug, they're a 1/4 to 3/8 shorter then stock spark plugs
The Accel part number is #566-S, the "S" denoting short. Or you can use the #577-S. AC delco also do some & the numbers are AC-44 or AC-45. If you do go to order these, just confirm that your heads take those size plugs :thumbup: .

I'd be inclined to try & dimple that tube a little more to give some extra clearance & get a boot on that plug lead. hth

:shock: Hi been thinking about your header/plug lead prob have you started your car at night so your engine bay is in the dark to see if its arcing accross as i had a similar problem (car running like a bag of shxxe) and my leads looked to be in perfect condition but ended up being U S so i changed them and had no probs after that .I would say you need a rubber boot/insulation on at the very least ,i would still be tempted to sort out the headers even if you just heat them up and recess them a fair bit more as you will just have the same problems again ,just hope this helps :thumbup: Cheers Neil

Yeah thank guys, will have a closer look at the carb for some numbers then.... Wasn't intending to run the plug without a cap but just had to remove the burnt crispy old one and then see if there was an arcing problem. So long as those headers appear to be 'correct' then I'll just do a bit of adjustment with the hammer! If that dont work then I'll look at the shorter plugs............

Well today we finally found the source of the extreme vibration when trying to accelerate. Nothing to do with dodgy carb or ignition.... it was the propshaft rear UJ that had somehow lost one of the bearing caps so the prop was rattling about in the U bolts, neither of which had been done very tight by the feel of them. :crazy:

New UJ ordered, amongst a few other things, from NPD tonight.............

Nothing done to the headers as yet. Got too many other projects on the go :crazy: Its a case of 'if it ain't broke leave it well alone'!! Even though that bare plug cap is close there's no arcing but now I know what the vibration is we'll get the plug sorted out...
Mustang is another headache as well, but cheers for the comment :thumbup:

Camaro has been off the road waiting for the correct UJ to arrive from NPD so haven't looked at the carb issue again.
However last week the UJ arrived, we fitted it friday and the car is 'normal' again with no vibrations....

Carb is still leaking fuel onto the inlet manifold which is not good so definately need some new gaskets I think. (Real Steel or where better ?)

So finally took a look at the carb for some numbers and its a Holley 80457 as stamped on the horn. Looking at the Holley website it seems identical to the 1850 so well done Nige for getting that almost correct ! ;) Will read up their literature tomorrow as I can't see what the difference is. Also going to test the vac secondaries are working properly - there is a definate stumble when you go to accelerate from a steady cruising speed. In the second pic below you can see that we have cable tied the primary linkage to the secondary and the stumble has gone and acceleration is much better. I've read that this is not a good idea to do this, but as a temp measure it seems to have proved something !!
