Hi, dose anyone recommend internal balancing? I wont be revving above 5.5 to 6. just wondering as i dont fancy finding out ive got a washing macine on spin cycle for my new stroker. Thanks.

Yes, balance the whole recipricating mass, rods pistons, crank, harmonic balancer, flywheel/clutch assembly or flexplate :thumbup:

ooh thanks Nige, makes me wonder sometimes, been told nahh save your money!!! So if i choose to balance the whole recipricating lot do i cart it of to the balancers wholesale block and all? Pardon me but would just a crank balance not be sufice? I do want to get all i can from this motor, dont we all but its a 2 bolt main small block, i dont want to wreck it of course but i am curious as to why one person says dont bother internaly balancing the crank and another says balance the lot. I guess the risk factor gets greater the more out of balance the componants are, just a bit nervous as to the cost of all this balancing as i am on a low budget as it is. Thanks again.

You won't need to give them the block as all parts are balanced without it. If you have a 2 bolt mains block, you'd be surprised at how strong they can be, so long as you don't go stupid with the revs. When you put an engine together that may have had any new/different parts fitted, such as rods, pistons, crank, harmonic balancer, flywheel/clutch assembly or flexplate, it only needs for each of those parts to be slightly out of balance & you could end up with a large descrepancy in the total balance of the engine. A balanced engine is more likely to live longer than one that's been put together with unbalanced parts. Don't just think that because parts might be new that they're balanced from the factory, it's not strictly true in all cases.

Obviously it depends on what you intend to use the car for, if it's just cruising around with a very mild engine set up, then it's not as critical to have it balanced. But, as soon as you want to get some "beans" outta the thing, then it does become more important to have evrything balanced correctly, which in turn should give the engine the best chance of staying alive & in one piece. Just balancing the crank alone is not gonna fix anything I'm afraid, you'd just be chucking money away.

As an aside, the guy that balanced my parts told us of a story of a guy, if I remember correctly, that had an imbalance in his engine & the harmonics from that used to cause the wing mirrors to unscrew themselves. :o hth

Nige thanks very much, the car is heading towards street and strip use but iam fumbling around in the dark with the best things to do, in my heart i honestly want an 11.5 quarter then i could say "i did it" so here we are the block alone sits on the floor the car goes in circles on its own with no hands on the wheel dont mind if it takes me years to get to my target time but dont want to build something thats going to waste all my money by chewing itself up. I would like to add a little nitrous along the way..... well straight away actually and am looking into mild twin turboing leaving a piston change only for a boost leap. Feel free to tell me if iam pipe dreaming. Will look into the balancing issue, i guess that is what they mean when they say fully internal balanced. Thanks once again was hoping to get out on the street this summer......
