Hoping to get some installation advice on the oil sender please.

The stock one was creating a short plus the new autometer gauge came with a new sender so i wanted to install that. problem is, it's way too wide and its pushing against the intake manifold so i can't get it close to threading in it.

I came up with the solution of buying a male:male pipe fitting and attaching a female:female to this is it would life it just high enough to clear the intake manifold. spent 3.5 hours looking fora pipe fitting that was 1/8 inch, could only find as small as 1/4 in stores. found a place on ebay, next day delivery took 4 days, awesome, just went out and tried it but the thread isn't right. wtf?! when i place the female:female adapter on the new or old sender, it catches the thread but about 1/4 of a turn later it just gets jammed. i tried the male:male fitting and it goes all the way through the female:female thread so i'm clueless here. anyone had this type of issue and knows how to overcome? I'm just sayin, now i'm beginning to understand why people sell project cars as unfinished :x

different thread pitch? or AN vs NPT?

haha, i think ur right Mark!

been searching for a while, came across this form autometers site:

states that their sender uses 1/8 NPT. the ones i brought were 1/8 BSPT. :wtf:

Naturally i'm having a tough time finding someone that sells NPT fittings. found 2 plumbing stores in slough trading estate so will pop in in the morning and god help anyone around me if they don't stock them.

Fingers crossed this solution will do the trick!

As a side note, it's all well and good knowing what the oil pressure is, but is there anything that states what it should be? would this differ for each engine? As you can see, i'm not mechanically inclined ;)

At a wild guess, between 40-60psi - at operating temp, may differ depending on oil used and oil pump (high pressure pump?) I'm sure someone on the forum will give you a more accurate answer :thumbup:

Cheers Mark, glad you're right, rather that than playing more and more guess work :lol:

Finding it very difficult to find a UK supplier that does NPT fittings. Managed to track down a company in silverstone that do all sort of lines and fittings so they are going to make me up a braided hose line to have a remote pressure sender.

I believe that the oil pump is standard, we will soon find out :) The autometer sender says max 100 psi so i should imagine you're correct in 40-60 being the sweet spot.

Will let you know how i get on.

Hi Ray, as Mark said, it depends to some extent on what pump & oil you're running. A general rule of thumb is 10 psi per 1000rpm. If the oil pump is standard then it's not unusual for them to run at 30-40 psi & possibly drop down to 15 psi on tickover.

What oil are you using?? The reason I ask this is that most oils nowadays have a very low content of zinc dithiophosphate (ZDDP). The zinc actually lubricated the cam & valvetrain on flat tappet cams. It's essential to have ZDDP in older flat tappet engines & especially so, when running in a new cam.

I use Valvoline Racing VR1 20W-50 motor oil. I always put a 12 fl oz bottle of Comp Cams engine break in additive into the 5 litres of oil, give it a really good shake & then use it in all subsequent oil top ups & oil changes, this way you're always keeping the engine fully protected.

That's a good rule of thumb basing 10 psi on 1,000 rpm :) Mechanically i have a LOT to learn still so apologies for my lack of knwo how :oops:

The new pipe should be arrivbing in a couple of days so will be able to test the theory :thumbup:

I'm not sure what oil is in there, there was a leftover bottle in the garage which the owner must have you used after the engine rebuild (he gave me lots of spares and extras from his garage, felt bad! he even had an original hood but we had no space to put it to take it home in so it went to the scrappy :cry: ... basically his now ex wife siad whatever is left on sunday morning is going to the scrap so we filled the camaro and my mates car with everything we could). Anyway the oil bottle is not a known name and just had 10w40 on it. I use Castrol magnatec 10w40 in the clio and was thinking of using the same for the camaro but i will try and find some of the ZDDP Valvoline you mentioned. Would have never thought that, thanks :) Even though it's only done 600 miles since the rebuild i will change the oil for good measure before i take it out.

When I had a wet sump we had an accumulator fitted that dumped the oil into the top of the engine ;
a upon start-up and
b when oil pressure dropped below 20 psi

When the oil is very hot ie over 200f the oil pressure drops- and we often had the accumulator doing its thing on hard right hand turns whilst racing in South Africa. There is a banked turn in Capetown and a hard about at Zwartkops. So in extremis 20 psi when hot see below:
Oil pressure: 25-30 min at idle
75-95 max at WOT cold
(WOT= wide open throttle)
Kenny Coleman agrees with the Valvoline Racing oils route- we only use Valvoline Racing 20/50 or Kendall 20/50 GT1
Have you tried Real Steel for those threads?

my smallblock runs at 80 psi on startup, when the motor is hot,this drops to 20 psi idling in gear, and when driving, stays at around 35/40 psi.
as long as you're getting a minimum of 15 psi plus, under ALL conditions, i shouldnt worry too much (i've seen almost new jags idling at 14 psi when hot!)

Hi Ray, it's not ZDDP Valvoline, but Valvoline Racing VR1 20W-50 motor oil. The 12 fl oz bottle of Comp Cams engine break in additive is what contains the extra ZDDP. Mix them together as in my previous post & you're engine will be protected. Both are available from Real Steel hth
