Hi all,

Just looking ahead in the '79 project and a bit confused on some of the wiring, maybe some of you out there are familiar with the below?
See the pic below for my depiction of the barrel. What i'd like to know is, is that what the key positions are for definate? I'm confused as to why there are 2 accessory positions. I will need to wire in the radio and a few other bits as they weren't in the car when i go them and only having driven the car once in Feb, i can't remember which is which. I need to know which is the accessory position so i can tap this to get the stereo to come on when turning the key to access etc. One big thing is the fuel pump is after market and quite noisy and need to ensure this only comes on at run, otherwise it will drive me crazy if i want to have the radio on or something while parked up. I'm sure it wont do any favours for fuel pressure either :)

Many thanks!!

Ray

Hi Ray, I've gotta admit I'm pretty crap at electrics, but managed to find this out for you.

The two Accessory circuits should be live in either position but there are different circuits activated on each one.

On the fuse block, there should be labels for Batt (Accessory) and Ign (Ignition) connections. The "Batt" connection is live all the time. The "Ign" connection is only live when the ignition is "on". Some circuits also drop out during starting.

There will be two power wires on the stereo deck. One for power (Usually a RED one-Ignition connection) and one to retain station memory(usually orange-Batt connection).

As a test, you can wire both of them to the batt connection and use the power control on the deck instead of running it off the ignition connection. Make sure that it's fused though.

This way you can listen to the radio when working on the car without needing the key in the ignition.

For the fuel pump, mine's wired in to a seperate switch, as is my starter & radiator fan. The ignition switch just turns on the ignition. The steering lock has also been removed. This means that in the event of an accident or some electrical problem whilst on the move I can turn off the ignition without the steering lock coming on. Likewise, I can turn off the fuel pump at any time. If you hide the fuel pump switch it can also act as an anti theft device as any would be thief won't be able to start the car if they can't turn on the pumps. My car starts by turning the ignition on, switch pump on, push starter button to run. I can also control when the electric fan cuts in. I can either leave it to come on automatically at a pre set temperature, or I can turn it on at any time I feel it needs it.

Obviously that's not for everyone, but I like the system as I have more control over the cars seperate functions.

Hope that helps,

cheers...Nige

Hi Nige,
Thanks for finding that out, definately helps!! Looks like my guesswork was right, strange about the need for the two accessory circuits but appears as though they run the same devices.

You're right on the fuse block, in the middle of the box there are spare blade terminals for batt and ign as i remember. Looks like best thing to do is use a spade connector here and run to a small distributor block to power stereo, cigarette lighter etc. Havin worked in car audio for a while i remember the classic problem of lost stations and lost memory so will make sure that the orange goes to batt (and fuse it), that can be the bane of many aftermarket stereos, having the 2 +12v cables the wrong way round

I like the way you've wired the start procedure! quite a good safety feature as well as anti theft! I tried tracing the fuel pump 12v cable but it's spliced into the engine bay wiring harness so i assume it's on with ignition, if not i'll wire in a switch, either way though, does seem a lot cooler to flick a switch for the pump (plus hiding it in case of break in gives much faith in leaving the car parked somewhere).

There is already a dual fan setup for the radiator with a switch wired into the dash with a simple on/off set up, but i also want to take the engine fan off the cam and use a large electric one. Thinking the best way to set this up is with thermostat, but to run a relay so that it can also be put to permanent on when needed, same way you've got it setup!

right, off to find the digicam charger for Ace Cafe :)

see some of you there, others later!

Cheers and thanks for the help!!

Ray
