so i was thinking, seeing as how trans am parts are so interchangeable, would a 73 pontiac trans am front bumper fit a 79 camaro?
just something that i thought of while working on the camaro this evenin :)

Sorry, but it wouldn't be a direct bolt on as there are some subtle differences between the two. If you look at the bonnet on the Trans Am you'll see that it has a swage or "moulding line down the centre that the Camaro doesn't. This swage lines up with the swage on the top of the nose cone on the Trans Am. The whole nose section of yours is one piece with a small valance, whereas the Trans Am one is much smaller & has a bigger, seperate lower front valance. Not only would you need a new nose cone, you'd need a new bonnet, the lower valance, the 2 marker lights in the valance, 2 grilles, 2 headlight mountings, 2 headlight bezels etc etc. These parts aren't cheap or readily available at a sensible price, although I did make a fibreglass nose section for my old '72 Trans Am as the original one weighed over 7 stone in weight :o :o

Here's a gratuitous pic of my old car

Wouldn't be suprised if the wings (fenders.. ) are different too, and won't line up properly..

I once toyed with doing an early 2nd gen pre 73' Camaro nose replacement on my 77', but it just got out of hand with all the parts I needed. Converting to a Trans Am would be twice the hassle...

Yeah, thanks for that, . You're right, sorry, I forgot to mention that, Doh!! The fenders on the Camaro are shorter at the front than on the Trans Ams.

haha, ok so not the best idea :) i love the one from cannonball (1976) so thought maybe this would be a good way of not finding one, buying and restoring, but looks like next project could be on the horizon :)
Nige urs is/was beautiful! why are you no longer the owner of it? it looks sooo nice!!
Strange how the body lines looks so similar but there are actually subtle differences.
Thanks for all the heads up, could have been a painful procedure with no/terrible results
Cheers,
Ray

ah ok was for a just cause then :)
can't beleive how heavy the front bumpers are on those things!!!! what were they thinking. Funny how with Lambo/Ferrari etc u'd spend 10's of thousands for a lightweight version, whereas with ours you could just stick a fibreglass front on and be done

By the early '70's onwards, the US were starting to get into the 5mph impact bumpers. The nose section is made from Endura rubber which in itself isn't overly heavy, it's all of the thick metal support bracing & bracketry bonded into it is what causes the weight. I weighed the doors on that car as well while I had them off & with the side impact bars in them, without power windows the pair of doors weighed just over 210 lbs !!! :o :o

whoa! goodness knows how much they would have weighed if they law had increased the impact speed minimum!!
The doors even on the 2nd gen are ridiculous. I can barely move them, will have to weight them now see what they work out. It's tempting getting fibreglass doors as the weight saving would be pretty substantial i'm sure!

Ray
