I wish I'd thought to ask, the AC Delco batteries are very good aren't they?
Actually, you don't have an indicator switch handy do you?

I like the AC delcos. I personally have never had any trouble with them. Are you after the indicator bit inside the column?

Bit of an update:

I don't think I am after the switch on the column any more!
Looks like the new flash unit fixed the indicator problem.
The hazards are still being a bit... jazz.
(Movie's here if you're curious: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1475528/IROCindicatorfixed.avi)

So I guess next stop is a new hazard flasher unit?
If anyone can point me in the general direction of where I'd find it on the car, I'd appreciate it. With my head under the dash the indicator unit was an easy spot, but I can't hear the hazard flasher clicking.
The other think I spotted while I was down there was the fuse box:

I know the single red lead that's been wedged in there is for the fog lamp (the former brake light in the rear spoiler has become the rear fog) but I'm mystified what the other two things wedged in there are for.

Alarm? Just trace where the wires go. The hazzard relay is normally easier to find than the indicator one.

ye good shout, trace em back and see where they go. Form the big blue phono wires i can see that it's had an upgraded sound system at some point, (always move sound signal cables away from power cables! so while you're there..) which must mean it's either an extra power for the radio or the alarm. sorry if you already know this, but newer car radios (by new i mean at least 10 years or more) have 2 power cables - one which is switched by accessoires (main power) and an another which is the memory (keeps your radio stations programmed) which is permanent. I know on the 2nd gens they only have the main power coming from accessories, so you would need to run a 2nd cable for the memory, which i guess explains 1 of them. good luck and glad you got the indicator circuit sorted :)

I found that partsorama do Federal batteries:

http://myworld.ebay.co.uk/partsorama/&_ ... 1423.l2754

Not sure if they are what the car will have come from out of the factory but it'll be better than a cheapo overpriced halfords one. Ideally an optima but they are $$$

Cheers!

Small update.
She let me down badly two days ago.
Wouldn't start in the car park at Sainsburys, and after begging a jump from a passerby, got on our way.
And then things started to go really wrong.
The radio was cutting in and out. Then the indicators stopped working. And when I put my foot down a little more to get up a hill, she had absolutely no power.
And then she started coughing and faltering.
I made it back home to the foot of my drive, and as I have to do like a three point turn to turn in to the drive, as I changed out of D and into R, she died.
So close!
Good thing then, that I was at home and had the new battery in the garage!

Fitted that, cleaned up all the terminal contacts, and touch wood, she's been fine ever since.

So today I thought I'd tackle the hazard flasher unit.
Now, am I right in thinking that it lives under a plastic cover, just next to the OBD socket in the drivers footwell?
Because if it does, I think I've got a small problem.

(The OBD socket's at the top of that pic.)

Someone's run wiring (looks like stereo stuff) right across the panel with no slack.
Sorry about the pics, on my back with my phone in hand!

Right - cut some cable ties, pushed and prodded things around, and managed to open the panel just enough to look inside.

Looks like my suspect!

Some more tugging and gentle persuading, and I managed to get my fingers onto it. Thankfully it's not a tight fit and came out nice and easy!

Got the new one in -

Gave the panel a bit of a dusting after that!

So, fingers crossed, the MOT in 5 days should be fine now I have reliably working indicators, hazards and fog light...

I think the alternator's done.
After getting stranded miles from home, again, with the new battery, the recovery truck had a poke about and found it was showing only 10 volts across the battery with the engine running.
Blasted thing. I'm all set to be back at work on Tuesday, and I need a car...
