Mark, Stu and Nige, thanks or your help. Even though it may seem a little, it's a lot! just the sanity of a reply is worth it :)

Mark, that website is perfect! thank you, i'm doing a custom dash cluster so the things on there are exactly what i've been looking for!!

Pic of my autometers being tested below, using standard incandescent bulbs with red boot, they are very dim, i had to turn out all the lights just to be sure they were on! So i'm gonna change them out for LED ones, Procharmo from this site recommended them as they are much brighter.

In terms of progress, things are getting there. Lights work now, and require the key to be turned for them to that seems to be fine now. Blower motor keeps working too :) Windshield wipers started working all of a sudden! Only, they don't switch off! they have 3 settings, delay, low and high. low and high work correctly, but delay setting stays on low and off stays on low. confuuuusssiiiin.

So it seems that the wiring is settling in. Mark, i think you're right, the wiring is brittle and as you said, once disturbed, mayhem breaks loose. the wiring is literally bedding in. more and more stuff is working with the same setup from a few days ago. i have cleaned a few terminals along the way, i think that helped too. I you'll be fine with a new harness Mark, it seems to be as you said, it becomes brittle and doesn't like change. I nearly got on the blower to NPD this afternoon to order a new fuse and harness etc but realised the cost is modular, so you start with the fuse harness, then start adding on courtesy lighting, radio, front lights etc and it's well above the 600$ price range so it's a no go. Next project yes, no question, new harness. I feel i've bonded with this one and got far enough that the majority of things work.

Still have 2 x fuse block outlets with no power... one is the one lablled "LPS" i guess this is the lighting for the heater unit, radio etc for when you power on the headlights. got not 12v on either side of the fuse. The other one is the CRTSY one i think, with the big Orange with black stripe coming out of it. pretty much right in the middle of the fuse block. got no 12v here either. Oh and the hazard fuse has no 12v. though it works. strange.

Stu, i've been reading up, i beleive it is the oil sender / switch that was causing a short circuit. apparently this switch / sender sits at the back of the manifold, almost underneath the distributor cap. I have an autometer oil gauge which i think came with a new sender unit so this should take care of it. You're right about the temp sender, its on the pass side around the headers on the side, button thing sticking out . Nothing attached to it on my block, explains why when i drove it home last year the temp stayed firmly in one place!

So i've just got to figure out the wiper not turning off issue, the LPS fuse outlet why it has no power, the same for the orange black cable coming out of the fuse block. Oh, and a way to wire in a hazard flasher, now that i can get fancy switch for it :)

Ok so latest progress update, took the fuse box out and apart as was thinking the fuse connection was not making contact, massive corrosion going on! the fuse holders had actually snapped so fixed those, cleaned up the back and took some pics that i will turn into a useable diagram as the inside fuse consists of 2 plates, so hopefully this will help any one with issues trace wires back in a MUCH faster way. Oh, the flasher came out after a manic amount of corrosion release spray, it was so corroded, it's now almost loose in its fitting :o

So this is fun, after cleaning everything up and fixing the connections, plugging it back in meant everything stopped working again :shock: no indicators, courtesy light! then magically, after about 20 minutes, it slowly came to life again. The lights were dim, then got brighter, weird! I have found the light switch is a bit dodgy, so ordered a new one aswel as front light harness, as they bulb housings are stiff and depending where you push them, the lights turn on and off. The wipers started working too! the wires were in the wrong way... but the natural way they sit is not how they fit back apparently, had to turn them the other way and now they work :crazy:

So looks like we may have an electrically functional car by the end of the weekend! Wiring diagram coming tomorrow eve, knakered now.

Glad to be of help, and I think everyone that's posted will be glad that were are keeping you sane :lol:

Sounds as thought the "electricity" slowly flows through the wires, as long as it gets there in the end hehe :D

I like the idea of the LED bulbs for the gauges myself, considering it for mine :)

Tell me about it Stu :( i think if you get all new wiring though you ill be ok. I found that NPD do every loom and harness you need. you can get the whole system, wiring from the battery, new fuse, different interior circuits based on your car options i.e rear heated windscreen etc so i recommed doing the whole thing. Below's a pic of some of the corrosion on the inside of the fusebox.

Will upload the wiring diagram soon, been working late recently so haven't had a chance to put it together.

Wow that is rusty....

I was looking to get the new style blade fuse box if I ever do mine, and luckily I've got very few extras, no power windows, aircon etc.. so hoping to have a simplest solution..

D'oh! they are too small... autometer use 501 T sizes:

So any last suggestions on the wiring before i take a baseball bat to the thing. I got the new GM light switch and front wiring harness (not cheap) through from NPD and went to start work this morning. Firstly, the courtesy lights dont work anymore, indicators dont work, sidelights dont work. baffled. everything was working besides the sidelights when i left the garage last week. now, nothing works, just the headlights. all the fuses have 12volts on both sides. i dont get it. i'm looking at destroying the budget and getting fuse wiring harness at $550+. could it be this? could it be the steering column wiring? why the hell does the behaviour keep changing every day?! Any ideas please let me know!

Was just looking to see if you managed to resolve your wiring woes!, but totally missed this post last week!

Have you tested that power is going all the way down to the lights that don't work? Still seems to be earthing problems, and brittle wire syndrome to me.

You could run a new wire (for testing) from the battery to your fuse box, to eliminate any broken contacts etc, just make sure you fuse it, you can try this with anything you want to test, just to eliminate the existing loom and it's potential problems. Time consuming, and probably the bodge way of doing it, but at least you will find out if the sockets are working...then maybe try to the nearest connector.....

Do the 2nd gen's have a horn relay? - on first gens, that doubles up as the distribution box alongside the voltage regulator in the engine bay....

Another soiurce of electrical diagnosis for GM cars (if it's similar to a first gen): http://www.madelectrical.com/index.shtml - look under the Electrical Tech section.

How much have you sunk into the wiring? if it's not much (apart from your labour time), then maybe it is worth getting a complete wiring loom, American AutoWire are highly recommended :)
