Hello all,

I'm going nuts here! I've spent two evenings trying to remove the drivers side kick panel and it's still there in it's fully glory. I have removed the whole interior, no dash etc it's the last thing and it will not budge. I removed all screws apart from the one in the middle which i can't get to because the e brake is in the way. i'm trying to remove the e brake but it seems to be bolted to the firewall. there was one bolt where the release handle is, i removed that but the firewall won't let the big chuck of metal go. Please can someone help me? Pics of the area in question below (thought i took better pics but this one is not great and also is sideways, sorry!). I've searched google and youtube for hours and hours and nowhere even comes close to mentioning these things!

2nd gen drivers kick panel / emergency brake removal help!

This might help you to remove the kick panel


Driver side:
1.) Remove 2 nuts on the motor side of firewall which holds the e-brake assembly in place. (There's a sealant between the firewall & the brake assembly which may try to stop it coming apart, so once it's all undone give it a good tug)
2.) Inside car, remove one bolt (top of e-brake assembly) and one nut (the one on the bolt that pokes through the kick panel) holding e-brake assembly in place. This will allow you to swing assembly out of the way enough to remove 2 or 3 hidden screws holding the kick panel in place. (sometimes you might need top slacken off the cables under the car)
3.) Remove screws, loosen sill plate and a-pillar. On some models they used a sealant between the kick panels & the body to stop water seeping into the car, this is a bitch to unstick. warm the kick panel with ahot air gun or hairdryer to soften the sealant & gently pull the panel.Kick panel will come right out.

Passenger side:
1.) Remove screws holding actuator cover.
2.) Remove 2 bolts holding actuator.
3.) Remove rest of screws holding kick panel. Another tip is to use those S-shaped screwdrivers since the heater box will not allow you to use a regulear screwdriver for one of the screws.
4.) Remove kick panel. It WILL clear the heater box housing. Kind of lift up and then pull out.

thanks, that's brilliant, i did check the firewall on the motor side yesterday but couldnt see anything so im about to go out and take another look. Luckily everything is gone in the car now, just that one part left and she's ready for some rust removal + welding where the rust has made holes. I would love to try lead loading but the rust is in awkward places and i think i'd struggle with flat surfaces anyway to start with. Anyway i digress. Thanks again for your help and ill report back shortly.

if you think you've figured out those numbers give us a shout :)

So i went out on my lunch break and gave it a shot. Found those bolts, they are to the right of the master cylinder.
I could not get any grip or movement - the previous owner has sealed the underneath WITH all the bolts on the car so i have a tough time removing bolts in general. I found using a flat head screwdriver i can dig away and get the shape of the nut/bolt back. I still couldnt undo them as the master cylinder was impairing movement so i decided to take off the inner wheel arch, that was fun (gonna be sprayed anyways so was gonna come off at some point) which gave me much better movement. got them undone, went back to the drivers side and pulled and jiggled the assembly and it loosened up pretty quick. viola! just need to unhinge the actual brake cable now and that bad boy is getting derusted!
Check out the 2 pics below ... first is the firewall on the engine side of where those nuts live, second is of them off.

Do you have the GM assembly manual? They cost about 20 bucks. Not sure what that is in pounds, but its cheap information....shows where ALL the bolts are.

Thanks Buddy, figured this out quite a while ago now. Bought the assembly manual too about 6 month ago's, very handy! bought it from NPD so had customs and import added onto it. very usefefl though, thank for suggesting :)
