could anybody wih an LT1 Z28 tell me what temp they run at? my temp gauge hits one mark before the red before the fans cut in and drop the needle to the half way mark when sitting in traffic for a few mins, fine when driving and using my temp gun the rad stays below 100c , dodgy gauge maybe? the car has done 60,000 miles and been serviced regularly

What temp does it show when moving down the road ?
Pity you have´nt got an actual show the temp in numbers gauge.

The trouble starts when the temp doesn´t drop. :lolno:

160 is too low, an engine needs some heat to work efficiently.

My LT1 used to run hot. I would put the Aircon on in traffic to cool it down.

The LS1 is brilliant. Never moves when up to temp.

The car is fine when it moving along and drops to the first mark on the dial which is around the 11 o clock position but climbs after a few mins of sitting in traffic, i had to remove the top plastic cover to see if the fans were working as i couldnt hear them but they are both spinning, its got the 180 deg stat in it and has an oil cooler so im probably being a bit paranoid after driving dervs for so many years now. I did have a flick through my performance book and it does say that they run warm when idle, the air dam that protrudes from the bottom of the car apparently causes an area of low pressure behind the rad and draws air through when its moving. I guess i shouldn't worry about it to much then as it doesnt ever seem to overheat. So thats another thing off of the to do list , just got to get somebody to fit my new clutch and flywheel which leads me to ask if anyone has ever successfully managed to bleed the clutch on one? its a sealed hydraulic system with no bleed valve and despite not slipping it bites right at the top. then i just need figure out what corvette the discs came from as i think one is a bit warped , get the paintwork tidied and graphics put back on and ill be an even happier bunny than i am already.

We changed the clutch in our 97 LT1 Trans am - in fact did it a few times.

Only took us half hour eventually and that was up on jack stands in the garage laying on our backs lol

With regards to bleeding - they aren't meant to be bled in the lt1's. We bought new hydraulics direct from the states and fitted it - wasn't too expensive iirc :)

iirc the optimum temp for an engine is 88 degrees c. That would mean a stat that opens at 190f (88c) is about right, then fan's would kick in closer to the 100c mark.

On my 3rd gen, when driving normally (cruising on motorway / going on 40mph roads etc) it sits at 70c. in stop start traffic it does climb up. If it's a crawl / lot of stopping, it will get to 106c at which point the fan cuts in, then cuts out at 88c. IIRC, air flow across the radiator only starts to make an effective difference at above 20/25 mph.

Sounds like yours runs comfortably at the temps you see. I wonder if the 160f stat was fitted to cars in the hotter states, cali, texas etc? On my Clio, the temp used to get to 88 /90 and not move, regardless of traffic conditions. Fair enough it was 1.2, so fewer and smaller explosions, but it seems that the stats and fans sat close to the optimum temperature, as you would not see any variation when up to running temp.

Hope that helps!

A2kmaro do you fancy doing mine then :-) i have the knowledge but not the capabilities now as my back is shot , mine's a six speed and i have an SLP stainless flywheel with the bigger pressure plate which i believe was from an LT4 as its a lot beefier than stock to fit in, a real ebay bargain :-) i also have two clutch plates one is a puck ceraamic type and the other is standard organic i think. I have found a place local that reline organic clutch plates for the princely sum of £30 so ill get it done. The clutch isn't slipping at the moment and when i brought the ebay clutch parts i got another hydraulic set as well which i might try and get somebody to fit as my clutch doesnt slip it just bites right at the top.
78 Camaro that sounds about right , mine is an SS with the full SLP package and i recently changed the stat out for a new 180 deg unit which i found was what it already had fitted, the temp gun shows the rad doesnt get over 100c and the fans do cut in although to my mind the seem a tad lethargic, im probably being a bit of a girl but your comments have put my mind to rest somewhat so thanks, hopfully i can go arrange for the bodyshop guy to sort out a few issues, get the wheels refurbed and order the graphics from stateside next week , lots of little niggly bits to do as im sure everybody has when you own a yank , my last one was a 3rd gen IROC that i had to sell on when my back went as i was physically unable to finish it and hadnt the funds at the time to pay somebody else to do it, sad at the time but my new one is a little gem and i would never have picked it up otherwise
