Post subject: | Knocking from the front passenger side wheel (I think) |
Hi all, In the last few miles I just noticed that there is a noise coming from the front passenger wheel/suspension area, I think. I don't think I hit anything on the road like bumps, I was on the motorway and then I came off and into the city, then was I started hearing it. I went underneath and couldn't find anything knocking with the exhaust which I thought it was the issue to begin with. The sound is a metal knocking sound I think and I think is only coming from the front passenger side wheel area. I bounced that side up and down whilst stationary but couldn't replicate the sound unless I drive it. Any tips of what to do with this? I guess the next stage is to take the wheel off and see if theres something knocking with the suspension. What would be even better would be if I could come round to somebody on here and show them/they can listen to the problem and then we can take a look together, in exchange for some "beer tokens" or a donation to a charity of your choice etc I am in Watford, Herts and I am willing to travel around. Thanks Alex |

One approach would be to do an 'MOT' type inspection. Jack up the side in question (or whole front if possible) and try shaking the wheel hard from side to side and up and down, plus in and out. Check the anti-roll bar (swaybar in American wrongspeak) links for play. Check for broken roadsprings and if you can get a bar under the wheel to pry it upwards, check for play in the strut top. I know, I'm going on now so I'll shut up. Anyway, generally check EVERYTHING for trouble and you usually find something. HTH Cheers, Martin |

some good advice ^^^, also check the lower front control arm bushing at the rear, they deteriorate as the are mounted side on. So the hole is vertical. THey are suppose to flex but crack and then knock. Also ball joints go and make a bank noise and only over little bumps and undulations rather than big dips or holes. Use a pry bar to see if anything moves unduely |

Thanks for all the responses guys. It was a suspension thing. The shock absorber mount at the top was rusted through and so it was knocking over bumps. My mechanic in Watford sorted it out as always for me, great guy. |
