Post subject: | Speed Restriction? How to know? |
Hi guys, I joined recently and I am looking for a z28 and I have seen 2 so far, looking to see a 3rd tomorrow. I just have a general question about the possible speed restrictors I heard about. After some research on here I think I have the answer but if somebody could confirm then that would be great. It seems that when the car was brand new the new owner had the option of choosing which tyres would go onto the car and then that determined what the top speed for the car would be. It seems if the owner chose the lower speed rated tyres then the cars ECU limited the car to about 117mph or roughly that type of speed. But if the new owner chose the higher spec tyres then that car was not restricted and its top speed is just what the engine/gearing can naturally do which roughly the high 150s. I don't think this is a major issue as I don't drive fast normally but seeing as I am looking to buy one I feel I should know what to look for. My question is, is there a really simple, definitive way of finding out if the car is restricted, WITHOUT, taking it up to 120 and seeing if it passes it? (don't want to do that on a test drive). Would original paperwork help me or maybe a sticker on the car somewhere? Thanks all |

If it's a V8 it's going to be really really unlikely to be restricted. However if it's the V6 I guess it's a bit hit and miss. |

Hiya, Thanks for that, ok that sounds really good and I totally agree with you, it was just something I heard so I thought I would check it out. Is there a way to know for sure, ie the original paperwork might give me a clue? Thanks |

Build sheet would say the original tyres it was ordered with, you would be then able to tell for sure. + there's bound to be a way to plug in a programmer and disable it. I wouldn't worry about it. |

On early LT1 models, GM did have speed restrictions on Z28s that came with non Z rated tires however it never did carry on 98 and up model LS1s as they all came with Z rated tires. You could actually tell the speed restricted cars by their speedometer, it would only go up to 120 MPH. |
