My 94 LT1 Z28 passed it's MOT today :D , but i got 1 advisory about the rear box. I knew it was living on borrowed time as i'd had a small, temporary patch put on it back in 2010 and it's just starting to blow a little.

So, i was wondering what are the best exhaust options? I quite fancy headers and a full system but that can get expensive and i'm worried about ground clearence. I live in Sheffield, aka 'Land of the Speedbumps' and i have problems with the stock Cat at times. So if i just go for a 'Cat Back' what's the best to get?

I don't want the car to sound too 'Brappy', i like the more 'deep rumble' type of sound if you know what i mean. I also could do with advice on wether or not i should import one or buy from this country.

Any thoughts on the matter welcome! 8-)

Hi , I run SLP headers and a full Magnaflow system on my 99 LS1. I don't get any clearance problems at all. I live in a village that's half a mile long with 7 speed bumps, one of which a school bus got stuck on a few years ago. The sound of this system is not too intrusive until you hit that little pedal on the right.

I remember reading something about headers and dual exhausts reducing ground clearance which is why i was worried especially with the state of the roads around here.
I watched a video on youtube of a Z28 with a Flowmaster cat-back which sounded pretty good. I'm also wondering about the in-house systems built by AutoPontiac but they're bloody miles away from me! :(

Hi,

I have the Magnaflow catback system which sounds great (even though it is only a V6) but I did have problems with the fitting (see writeup in this section of forum).

However I used this company to modify it but if I had known that they were so local to me I would have had them make the whole system for me from scratch. It would of been cheaper. I don't know where abouts you are in the country but they may have a branch near you.

not sure if they make exhausts for gen 4 but on my gen 3 i have a cat back borla twin exit system cat back but with the cat removed and sounds great at idle or low load its just a low deep rumble of the v8 but if you open it up its load and deep enough to set car alarms off but sounds really good not chavy

the cat was removed from mine for ground clearence as it was to low for tesco speed bumps

Thanks for the help gents. The Longlife site reckons Stockport is nearest to me (Sheffield). I'll do some phoning around tomorrow and see what prices are like.

At least it's not something that has to be sorted immediatly so i can do some research before i part with the cash.
And parting with cash is not an easy thing for a Yorkshireman to do. :cry:

you'll have clearance issues if you've lowered the car mainly.

Depending on what you get for the LT1 the headers may actually hang lower than standard. I lucked out with some ebay specials from the states that we old stock kooks or similar and they fit well and only cost a couple of hundred quid.

I've got a custom true dual system on mine, my dad's an engineer so we measured everything up and made a custom system. Although its' very loud (as I wanted)

Bang for buck the custom exhaust places usually have reasonable prices and as long as they do the over axle bend correct it will be nice, and should only be a few hundred quid or so..

Question of how much money you have.

I'd just go with a cat-back unless your going to be doing a lot of engine mods.

Cheaper ones like Magnaflow are good for the money but if you want the best Borla or Corsa are the way to go. You paying the extra money for a exhaust that doesn't drone but sounds right when you want it to.

That sounds very nice Dunc, i think i might just stick with the cat-back as i doubt i'll be doing much more to it and the rest of the car is stock.
The car's stock height. There's no way i'd lower it with the humps and potholes around here, i'd wreck the underside everytime i went out!
All been well i should have time later to phone a couple of places so i'll price up an in-house system and see how things compare.
