ebay's a good place to try. They don't cost a lot and are easily mapped. You have to put the car in program mode if I remember by removing the radio fuse and turning the igntition on and of a few times, then something like the boot undoes to let you know the car is ready. If you need to know exactly how to do it I can look in my manual. Let me know. I bought a 2nd hand one from ebay as a spare and works well. Hope that helps |

Hey Howie, are you saying that you can just buy a keyfob for the car? I also have a 98 3.8 and I've always used the key, I thought you had to buy a kit or something for the remote to work?? Mine at the moment works by opening either door with the key and then pressing a button on the inside of the door to unlock the other door (I believe it works this way to prevent car jacking!). Regards DS |

If your camaro is a japanese import it will not have central locking. My 97 is a jap import and did not have central locking, this is due to the frequency the fobs work on apparently being illegal I have been told by a specialist. I purchased a central locking and alarm kit direct from GM, was just unfortunate that the dick who fitted cocked it up somehow and has never worked 100%. Am now considering starting again with a keyless entry kit and ditching the door handles. If your camaro is an american import i guess it must just be a fault somewhere. Hope this helps. |

sorry for the massive delay in replying but only just noticed your reply so you may have the solution. Mine's an American/Canadian import and came with one fob originally. It has the button inside the door that opens the other door also but have always used the fob. You press the fob once and it opens one door, press it twice and it opens the other. I don't know about Jap imports but as a suggestion you could try and see if your car has the program mode which sets other things like whether the doors lock themselves when you drive down the road etc. If that works then you can see if you can get a cheap fob ( i paid around £10) and see if it works. The only other thing is mines the Z28 to which may be different spec re the fob, I don't know. Do you have the manual to know how the program mode works? The manual also tells you about the fob. It does seem strange and is interesting to read about the jap imports problem. |

Just spotted this issue. Have you had a look at http://www.camarosource.ca where you can actually see the sales brochures for many different years / models/ It might tell you whether you should or shouldn't have something. Loads of other info as well. Worth a look. |
