OK, so now I have my new toy (4th Gen V6), I want to update the sound system slightly, it has the stock tape/radio deck, which is OK for a radio, but can I get a CD player that fits in that strange shaped slot, or will I need to wire one in the glove box or somewhere? and one of the door speakers buzzes!!

Hi, I was in a similar position to you, in that my 2001 Z28 arrived from Japan with a Monsoon tape head unit and both front speakers were rattling (blown).

I chose to replace my head unit with the CD version of the Monsoon, which was a factory option. In my opinion they sound pretty good and it was a straightforward swop out. I got mine from the classifieds section on the ls1tech forum, though there are always a few going on ebay.com...for not an awful lot of money...as long as the sellers are willing to ship to the UK.

NB: If you have a stock CD changer in the trunk, or plan on picking one up, then make sure you get a Monsoon that was manufactured 2000 onwards if you do buy one. Only those manufactured mid 1999 onwards (so safest to buy 2000 onwards) can control the CD changer.

An alternative is to look on this website:

http://www.crutchfield.com/

You can search via make/model to find recommended replacement head units.

Regarding the front door speakers, it seems (from what I've read) that they blow fairly easily and there are loads of threads on the US forums about what to replace them with. I researched this for a while and ended up buying a pair of Infinity Kappa 62.7i (available quite widely over here). Haven't fitted them yet, but apparently they are a good match both electrically (being 2 ohm) and physically, requiring no modifications to get them to fit.

If you are interested in replacing your front speakers with the Kappa's you may find this thread useful...

Good luck with whatever route you choose!

Hi,

I have a similar problem.
I want to update the stock AC Delco tape player with a CD/MP3/USB player.
I have a 1998 3.8L auto and find that this unit doesn't control the Sony CD changer I have in the boot
Does anyone know what I could replace it with without leaving big ugly gaps etc.
I did check at Crutchfields but the recommended units seemed to be smaller and ideally I would just like to replace without any mods needing done!! Cheap as possible also helps!

TIA

DS

Dont know if this is the sort of thing you mean ?
Just running a basic JVC unit, with door speakers, 150watt JVC, and rear speakers,
150watt Pioneer.
Altered the slot in the dash to suit. Wont waffle on, but if this is what you mean,
more than glad to help, few piccys taken 5 mins ago. Sorry, but its darko`clock !! ;)

Thanks for the reply Bigmincey :)
I was hoping to find a unit that was the same size as my existing unit, just swap and go, but might be more difficult than I thought as it tends to be bigger than the usual units you can buy!
You're setup looks good tho :)

Regards

DS
