Nice explanations guys, thanks. I shall call both firms and get an idea of costs.
Longest journey I do in the chev is to Billing, so Id suffer the worse mpg. Like the idea of a faster pull away! Is there any other detriment, does it put a greater strain on the tranny or prop?
Questions, questions
Generally you`ll hear the biggest downfall is higher revving and slightly more fuel. In reality if you drive around in town it won`t use much more fuel as it`s getting into a higher gear sooner and quicker. You`ll use the loud pedal more though and really that`s why you`ll burn more. Like I said earlier the car will feel like its lighter. It shouldn`t have any detrimental effect on anything else except the slightly extra load from you using the shoe now an then BUT I`m not sure on the 10 bolt rear end `issues` and high gears so Luke or Chevy Stu will be more clued up here. I don`t know about the auto box on 4th gens but on the Mustang with 4.10s in town I could drive around in OD where as before it was continually shifting between 3rd and OD which I suppose isn`t handy so in that respect the gears helped. Not sure on your set up though. If I had had manual I wouldn`t have went down the gears route.
On the motorway your top gear won`t feel as lazy (depending on the ratio) and might be slightly annoying and that will use a bit more gas but it`s not a huge amount. If the car`s not a daily driver then it won`t matter. That`s the only thing that bugged me. Being on the main road and not being able to rumble along at 60 or 70 with the engine ticking over.
You`ll hear stuff like "Don`t fear the gear" but they don`t add anything to the car power wise although they do feel like they get it moving better but the performance difference isn`t a magic jump if the truth be told. Going too steep will result in a useless first gear.
I`ve read allsorts of bo[[ocks on forums about 4.56s on street tyres with a blower and having no problems hooking up.
. I had thought about a supercharger but after the gear install I realised there was no way I could add any more serious power unless I went back to 3.27s or similar to get traction. If you`re spinning you`re not winning. Fun though.
What I`m saying is if you have any plans for forced induction in the future I`d think long and hard about changing the diff ratio and if you do don`t go overboard.
Like Chevy Stu says, choose wisely and you`ll gain something in the Butt dyno department and for a few hundred quid its not bad. It`ll put a smile on your face if nothing else for a wee while.
On another note. Losing top speed is a hotly debated subject as re gearing your car will actually HELP it get up to speed better. Speaking from experience I lost NO top end speed in my car when it was re geared . I ran out of balls before it ran out of speed. Most cars havent got the power to redline the car in top gear anyway so actual top speed is theoretical in most cases and without huge power its unattainable.
On another note. I actually went down the taller tyre route to lower my gearing a tiny bit.
Here. Have a faff about with this (left hand side).
