Hi Guys,

I have been looking into the issue of tyres. The standard size is 215/60R-16which I currently have on mine.

Now, 235/55R-16 are almost the same overall size, but are not available :(

245/50R-16 are 13mm under size overall.

245/50R-17 are 13mm over size overall.

My question is, how much difference does that 13mm make with the gearing, speedo reading. The ride height would also differ but that can be delt with.

What are any of your experience's? How much is the speedo reading Fast/Slow?

Cheers Gerry

standard speedos read over anyway, check with sat nav, mine is 5 mph out

the 13mm oversize would be better as it would make speedo more accurate, 13mm is nothing though, you'd probably not tell

I take it you have some 17inch wheels about then, they would look nicer too :D

Hi

Does anyone know if there is a quick way to work out these sizes, especially if you were to change rims?

I've looked at the brochure for example on the 2001 Camaro and all 3 sizes that Gerry has mentioned are standard but depends on whether V6, Z or SS.

At the moment it all sounds like a dark art. I've looked at some other Camaro sites to sae what they say and tyres up to 300 are mentioned, but with the assistance of a hammer to the inner wing in some cases!

Cheers

Stuart :?

Hi Guys,

No I haven't got any 17" wheels yet but could be thinking about it because you are correct in saying bigger is better but how much it throws things out I'm not sure. I appreciate that 13mm under or over size dosen't sound very much but I have just been doing some sums.

Compare - P215/60R-16 with P245/50R-16 Difference

Dia. 664mm 651mm -13mm

Circ. 2086mm 2054mm -41mm

Ok to cover 1000meters it would take 479 rotations of the P215-16's

So if I am looking at this right, for every rotation the P245 is 41mm less so after 479 rotations for the P215's to cover 1000m the P245's would be 19.5meters behind????? Is this why Drag cars have bigger wheels?

Have a look at this site for compareing size's
http://www.etyres.co.uk/tyre-size-calculator.htm

Anyway I'm completly confused :?

Cheers Gerry

Gerry

Good info on sizes!!

Then all I will need to think about is offset, another subject that is a bit of a mystery.

I'm OK at the moment as I got a new set of 245/50R16s recently. But as they are getting closer to extinction, the better informed I can get the more chance I have of making the right choice!

I look forward to joining the world of the educated!

For info, anyone wanting to know what wheels they should have had at outset, http://www.tacreationsusa.com/camaro_wheels.htm

Cheers

Stuart :) :) :)

I had 275x40x17 all round then replaced then with the standard corvette C5 wheels which were 275x40x18 on the rear and 245x40x17 on the front. They fitted straight on no problem. Having the narrower tyres on the front really helped the handling and got a lot less road pull..

I used tom tom and found that 66mph on speedo = 70mph per tom tom.
PS having the different size tyres front & back means that the traction control and ABS turn off after a mile..but hey who needs them.

Gerry, Your right regarding the calculations but ~20 metres in a a km is only 2% difference. Thus the speedo isn't going to be that far out. As Howie says with his change of tires at present the speedo is 4 mph out. As long as you know about this issue either up or down reading checking via sat nav then there will be no other problems :D

Do they check these things on MOTs. I suspect not, more a case of does it work at all.

However, the better it works the less chance of a surprise when you meet Mr Gatso!

Around Sussex they've assured us they all work!
