Autobox pan seal has started to weep on my 94 Z28
I bought a Fel pro gasket and it clearly states that this gasket should be fitted dry.
As these gaskets are prone to leaking surely a bead of sealant would be a good idea?
The gaskets are not prone to leaking. Owners are prone to over tightening the bolts.
Lay the mounting side of the pan on a flat surface, and make sure it is not warped. If it is severely warped, replace the pan. If one edge, or flange, is lightly warped, use a hammer to straighten it. Look carefully at the bolt holes. If they are bowed in, like they were overtightened, use the ball end of a hammer and tap them back until they are flush with the lip of the pan.
Clean the lip of the pan with brake cleaner, and apply a very light coat of gasket sealer to the pan. Fit the new gasket in place, and allow the gasket to set. Install the pan, and torque the bolts to 12 foot-pounds. Tighten the bolts a little at a time side-to-side and end-to-end to ensure the pan is drawn into place evenly.
If you don't have a torque wrench just tighten the bolts by hand as tight as you can, then turn them another 1/4 turn, no more.
