Hi all,
I have a 1985 Z28-E, owned it for about a month now and it’s been going great. On Tuesday I checked all the fluid levels, the transmission fluid was very low on the dipstick ( only showing about and 8th of an inch ). I topped the fluid up until it was sitting at the full mark ( having checked it hot with the engine running after moving the shifter through all positions ).
We then went to a cruise night about an hour away with no problems, we came home a while later and again all was great, until we got to our street, the car coughed but kept going. Thinking we were just low on fuel, I went for fuel the next morning and it didn’t want to change gear, the revs kept climbing but no gearchange. Having limped the car home I left it parked up while I was at work. Checked the transmission fluid level when I got home while it was cold with the engine off and the fluid was at the full mark on the dipstick. Thinking I must have put too much fluid in, I siphoned out the amount that I had added and it’s improved the drive a little. But it’s still doesn’t feel right, it still stutters a little when you try to pull away and takes ages to change gear.
The fluid I siphoned out was reddish brown and has a burnt smell to it, have I fried my transmission or might a fluid and filter change help?
Should I try removing more fluid?
Can anyone advise how much fluid the transmission holds, please
I’m also thinking it might be possible that someone has at some point has put the wrong dipstick in, if it had the right amount of fluid in, this would explain it reading as low fluid level.
Thanks in advance for any help
