I'm having mine rebuilt atm, you can also look for a 4l60 which is the same tranny

Car Details:68 pontiac firebird coupe project car,my aim is a street friendly, lightly modified pro.touring style.
Lowered ,mild body mods,400 cu in SBC engine, Muncie 4speed, 10 bolt posi axle, disc front drum rear.
68 firebird convertible ( long term project) Stock resto/mod style ,400 pontiac th350
They both have a weak reputation and are expensive to rebuild relative to the older TH 350 and 400
If you fit one get the best, biggest cooler you can and change the fluid and filter on a regular basis.
I blew a 700r4 on a C4 corvette years ago and know from experience that they survive best behind a mild 305, anything like a hot 350 or bigger will chew them up and spit them out .
US websites are full of sad stories about "upgraded " trans that had very short lives ...

I spoke to alders who assured me.they could rebuild mine to take 5-600bhp but wanted £2k plus vat! My good friend is rebuilding mine.with some.other goodies but I guess 350-400bhp will be about the most it will see, it's for the typhoon not the Camaro anyway, the other one was Completley fried and plates/ parts had welded themselves together from.too many "boost launches", it will eventually end up with a 4l80 when I'm.rich enough to find one

The old turbo Buicks had the 200r4 and they were rumored to have lots of heavy duty factory upgrades and they did seem to be able to withstand the punishment of drag racing, but good luck finding one in the UK.
Some of the specialists in the US list upgraded 200r4 trans and converters for a lot less than Alders, but then you have to ship it and pay all the outrageous duties the gubment slaps on us .
The 4l80 is strong enough for just about any engine but also a big and heavy unit, depending on how much room there is the tunnel /firewall might need some gentle massage.

Apparently the 4l80 goes straight into the typhoon providing I can find one with a v8 housing, cheapest I have found is about 2k but I guess I would also need to spend a good few hundred quid more on a standalone ecu to run it with, I'm not that fussed really as with the new chip I have I should be around 4.5 sec 0-60 which is plenty fast enough to destroy most supercar owners egos :-) they seem very common in Australia with all the utes and I have a good friend who emigrated there so I may get him to find me.one and ship it across at some point. Typhoons do eat transmissions.but people seem insistent on boost launches which they were never designed for
