Just got me a 1992 RS with the 305ci. This is my first yank V8 and apart from being a bit shabby it's a lovely car. What's people's advice on drawing a bit more power from the 305ci ? The air con don't work so was going to out that. Also is a carb conversion worth while? |

Headers, camshaft, I believe you can get chips for them as well as my friend did his iroc (although that was 20 years ago) |

the RS 305 is a TBI (throttle body injection) and not known for it's power. some people ditch the whole injection system and go carb, and then add headers etc... it'll make more power but won't be original so depends on what's important to you... |

305's have been a neglected orphan engine and taken a slagging over the years BUT it has been shown recently that power is not that hard to find in this unloved little pig. J/K! Check the old mags or interweb and you find the EngineMasters threw up one loon who rebuilt a junk 305 to almost 400hp without spending much more than most spend on a burger and chips. I'll make it easy for you: http://www.hotrod.com/how-to/engine/080 ... k-rebuild/ Get on with it then! Cheers, Martin |

What's wrong with your fuel injection?

The TBI system is great for an all round engine really, it'll be economical and can give you a kick up the arse when it wants to, but as an out and out performer, the TBI really isn't brilliant. One of the biggest issues with the stock 305 TBI is it's inability to breathe. These poor engines are strangled by the badly designed manifolds, both stock items are very cheap and easy to replace, I believe summit now offer an intake which will accept the original TBI being bolted back on, and a set of headers from Heddman can be bought with a Y pipe to connect to the original exhaust system for under £500. If you are considering a carb swap, you'll need to change the dizzy to, fitting something like a stand alone HEI unit will work, the stock dizzy is advanced by the computer, which is why the initial timing on these engines is set so low. You will need for a carb swap: A carb (nothing bigger than 600cfm, vac secondaries and choke for ease of starting) HEI or standard Dizzy with coil Carb manifold. I also believe you'll need some way of making the Overdrive lockup working on the Torque Convertor, although, that isn't critical. I've been running my 305 in drag racing for the last year and have managed to get it into the high 15s low 16s, this is with a completely stock engine and exhaust system. I had no plans of messing with the 305 as buck for buck your money would be better spent on a 350. That said, if you're a dab hand with engines and fancy some fun, building a 305 up could be very fun. |

Wooh! This forum still exists, that is good to see, some interest out there for these cars. Spotted this thread and thought its pretty much what im doing, upgrading a 305. So far I have cobbled an exhaust system, shorty headers, dual 2.25" pipe, dual cats and an x pipe into a dual inlet/outlet muffler, planning to add cut outs at some point. Added at least 30hp without tuning the ecu, this is with a stock TBI system and a dual snorkle airbox. Planning to add: Variable fuel pressure and gauge, apparantly stock is often weaker pressure than the spec was meant to be. Upgrade to later ecu and start tuning, have most the gear minus a wideband o2 sensor. Upgrade intake manifold, have one that will fit under the bonnet and make more power, just needs some plumbing added. TBI fuel systems are plenty capable, theres no need to ditch it unless you want to tune a carb instead. Stock LO3 TBI has enough fuel for around 240hp and flows enough air for over 300hp. |
