Where do folks source their headlamps from (for the correct UK MOT spec)?

Thanks!

Ray

That is a great find, thanks 78. I need to bookmark as this stuff can be bought through the likes of Euro Car Parts etc.

Thanks 78, great bit of research - I'm also hunting for replacement headlamp units.

I ended up phoning Hella and was given part number 1LB 003 177 511, and someone who stocked it... However when I phoned the stockist they had never heard of it...

I need lamps without position lights and found part number 1LB 003 177 081 for the same lamp but without the position light hole:

http://cat.hella.com/web/public/hella/e ... 4517139458

I think both 511 and 081 can be used for both left and right - however I can't find 081 for sale anywhere... My current plan is to get the car to Rocky and ask him to sort out the electrics, and see what he has to day about headlamps!

Oh, and I had a quick hunt around Eurocarparts and drew a blank for our headlamp units, unfortunately.

Glad this is helpful! :chevy:

I found the best source for a true near side / offside set is look for someone breaking an 80's VW Scirocco. I found a set on ebeay and luckily the seller had high res pics, so zoomed in and you can clearly see the beam pattern and it's the same for both sides (has the flick up on the left when looking at the lens, meaning it projects to the curb side on a UK road) which is good as it means left and right are interchangable (according to that anyways).

Though, i ended up buying a pair of these as they were new and just about the same price (£66 delivered) as it would be for a used set. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Hella-12V-Hea ... 1101150454
The lens pattern is slightly different and looks like it has a flick up on both sides, so hoping it's just in the way the lens is patterned and still throws the beam in the correct direction... according to Hella's website they are "for left hand traffic" which according to wikipedia means: "left-hand traffic (LHT), in which traffic keeps to the left side of the road" So fingers crossed they will be correct for our roads and whizz through the MOT. They are E1 certified (means they were tested and certified in Germany) which can't be a bad thing lol.

I like the idea of the running light in the bulb as the car currently has amber running lights so it makes the conversion easier. It's an extra bulb in the unit which is good so it can be easily left out if you don't want the running light to be in that unit. I'll let you know how the wiring goes

Great stuff - let us know how you get on.

I might buy some of the 511 units, and just stopper the redundant hole with a grommet or something. I'll need four units though...

My car's currently wired with the sidelights in the front bumper, albeit with faintly embarrassing Halfords-grade LEDs *shudder*. Another job to do when the thing's finally up and running!

Haha, we've all been there at some point! I still have some large blue undercar neons if anyone wants them

They arrived today, certainly impressed - they are genuine Hella German made units and they feel really solid, covered in German stickers etc. Not bad for £60 for both pairs! They came without bulbs, the little sidelight is there so it fills up the whole, so with your setup, you can just not connect wires to it. I do hope the beams are the correct aim - all the german stickers have me slightly worried, but the model number on there coincides with left hand drive. Will test the sealed beams in there against the garage door, change out the unit and see the difference.

I'll also need to figure out how to wire it up to the connector and find some bulbs, so this will be fun. I'll take pics of the unit in a few days and do the install next month... I'm at my day job currently and also need to try and find out why my car won't start (see General thread on the forum) and try and fix it, plus i've got to edit the dialog of a 2 hour film (something that takes 6-12 weeks normally) in 2 nights!! This is not gonna be a fun week...

Oh i should mention, i found a UK ebay seller who has 2 VW Scirocco lights. They are 'sold' but he hasn't received payment and said he'd contact me later this week, Don't know the price but if it's cheap enough i'll take them and resell them later, or pass the details on if someone wants them now. Those are definitely UK spec.

Also, in terms of wiring, i was planning on having the running light in the outmost lamp, along with the normal headlight. The inner lamp would then be high beam. I think that the high beam doesn't need to be aimed? Seeing as you won't have them on with oncoming traffic (though in real life, we know that's not true). If it does need to be aimed, then i will either use the outermost lights for all 3 functions and keep the inners for looks, or buy a second set and use them for high beams only. Wiring / MOT regs will dictate!

If anyone is looking for a set of lights, the guy breaking the VW Scirocco still has them, if you go to the below link and 'contact seller' then price etc. can be discussed

I always forget the terminology but i think it's cross reference / interchange. They usually publish those books and you look up the part for your car and it shows you all other part numbers that you can look up. I think i saw one online that you paid to access, which could be worthwhile.

In the meantime i use Rockauto... when you find the part for your car, you can click on the part number and it shows a list of all other cars that use that part. Unfortunately in this case you only see the manufacturer and year range, not the model, so you have to do some google searching. Sometimes just googling the part number of your car can bring up a random website / reseller that shows other models that it fits and you can reverse search for a part that way.

I looked up '95 Camaro on Rockauto and unfortunately the headlights are quite limited, as only Chevy, Pontiac and Oldsmobile used them in the years 92 -97. The good news is there is always a 4th gen in for breaking somewhere so you should be able to get a replacement fairly easily. Is yours broken / damaged?
