How does the odometer get it's reading on a third gen - is it via a speedo cable still? I have a 305tpi (trans am) and noticed on the motorway this morning that the numbers weren't turning. when i came off the motorway and was on the regular roads, i noticed that they started turning again. Could it be a loose cable, something like that?
Cheers!

They started off cable drive but I think later on the went to electric.

I replaced my speedo cable some years ago, it flaps around like mad at low speeds, settles down as the speed goes up.
The trip odometer just clicks, never registering any mileage.

Replacing the cable is easy until you have to get behind the speedo, no room for porky fingers in there. :lolno:

Thank you and good point, i should have the mentioned the year... '87. I have a year specific factory manual being sent over from the states, but it won't be here until at least a week or 2. Maybe it's the same problem that you were having then? Loose / knackered cable. Thinking about it some more, the speedo reads the correct speed and doesn't seem to have issues, it's the odometer reading that seems to be the part playing up. I'll take a definitive note of the mileage on the way home to be double sure

Okay so the reading on the odometer does go up, but only sometimes. I noticed on the motorway that the numbers weren't moving again, and i heard a ticking sound, which as came off the motorway, was slowing down so it sounded like the thing that turns the numbers, is out of place by a bit, or something like that. In other words, it sounds like the cable is ok on the transmission side, as you can hear the clicking from the dash, so it's something to do with the odometer / cable connection to the odometer? Any thoughts on how to remedy this? I could always get an odometer from one that's being that parted out? I would rather fix this one though :)

Thanks!

Ray

If the little cogs and wheels are worn out getting another as a parts source might be the way.

I got one a long time ago from Bauer Millet in Manchester, it is a Canadian speedo, does the kilometers.

I´ve just been into the darkest depths of my garage and pulled out a third gen speedo, it´s an 85mph one.
Looks as good as new.

you are a scholar and gentleman! Thank you for delving into the depths of the garage to check

Interestingly enough, mine is a Canadian export, so it's only in KM  . Always having to do maths to work out what speed to go / what speed i'm doing, so a MPH gauge will be a very welcome change! How much do you want for it, i can imagine postage from Spain won't be too cheap?

Thank you!

Ray

p.s 13mile journey today only clocked up 0.9km!
