Post subject:  Stalling after cold start PLEASE HELP!

Hi, I’ve got a 1991 RS 5.0 tbi. After getting the car back from its MOT it has been having problems starting cold.

The car will fire up right away but stalls out immediately after, unless I keep my foot on the accelerator above 1500rpm for about 2 min until it warms up a bit. after that the car will run fine and will start again fine when warm.

I have cleaned the AIC valve, the EGR valve and thermac air cleaner is working and I replaced the fuel filter last year.
Any ideas what the problem could be? I’m beginning to thinking it could be the fuel pump?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

p.s. this is my first yank and I’m still getting used to my way around the engine. Thanks :)

Mine struggles when it's really cold but that's because I've removed the original air filter housing and the air pump. So now it's running a CAI dual snorkel housing with no thermal flap thingy.

I don't think it would be the fuel pump if it's working when you rev it to 1500rpm to keep it going. A failing fuel pump would just kinda kill it dead. To me it sounds like it could just be a reluctant start which could be a weak spark... Have you checked your plugs?

Sounds like coolant temp sensor isn't working right. I would start there and see if it's showing the correct values. If coolant sensor isn't working right and doesn't show the ECU the car is cold it can't enrich the mixture for cold start.

I'll go with what Fiero said  + a temp sensor cant cost too much to be worth a try ???

I havent seen a close up pic of a 3rd gen tbi unit but just thinking of tbi units i have worked on (some years ago)
The ford unit had a motor on the side of the tbi unit which tracked the throttle butterfly and it actually earthed through the middle of the motor and onto the touch plate and gave all kinds of starting and running issues if the contact points became dirty etc we just cleaned them with some emery
May be completly irrelevant peace of info but heyho :)

Ah, the parts hanger syndrome.
For those who haven't heard the term it's someone who has no idea why the car isn't running properly so they take wild guesses and start throwing parts at it using the logic that one of the parts has to fix the problem.
I worked for Checkers, now O'Reilleys auto parts for a few years, and we had a regular clientele of supposed auto repair professionals who would buy say, a temperature sensor and then try and return it when it didn't fix the problem. We made lots of money from them

Question number 1: Does the check engine light come on when you turn the ignition on?
Question number 2: Does the light stay on when the engine is running?

Though i'm no expert, sounds like a choke issue to me...

I assume that was aimed towards me? I told him to check it, not replace it...

Hey guys OP here, IT WAS THE TIMING!

I eventually got the cold start issue sorted. It was the coolant temperature sensor, started on the button after that and the check engine light that used to come on after a minuet or so stopped coming on.

However, then it started to stall when the engine was at operating temperature and I was in gear stopped at say a red light. That turned out to be a timing issue. The issue being that it was quite a bit out. Dunno how or why but it was. Got the timing set again last year or so and have had no problems.

Hope you get it sorted mate good luck.
