hi guys my 1st head pickler for u guys would an aftermarket inline external fuel pump still operate i.e. pull fuel through with the original fuel pump if it was still in place as i know its supposed to be a big job guys any help or input would be a great help

Welcome to the club! With the original pump in place, would you still want to have that functioning, or is it knackered and instead of replacing it you're looking at doing the inline jobbie?

If it's the first, i would say that it may be best not to have 2 pumps functioning as they would have different flow rates and one would get damaged / dried up.

If you're losing the original and going inline only it should work - my 2nd gen has an external pump which heightwise sits nearly at the top level of the tank and draws fuel up quite happily.

Thanks pal, Im trying to avoid removing the tank but if i have to i will,cause av heard its a pain in the arse to change,not that im unfamilar with this type of work i am a mechanic but sourcing the replacement parts is the pain i have,that and getting the right one although ment to say lol that i would unplug the original pump so it lay dorment and would fuel still be able to pass through it,on another note any idea's where i could get a new iac for it

The impression I've gathered (only through reading up online and not from personal experience!) is that you need to remove the existing tank pump to use an inline pump or else you're going to be under fuelling. Keeping the pump in place (assuming it's failed) is a sort of 'get you home' fix, but nothing you'd want to run day to day.

I've just picked up a Bosch unit and tank filter for about £60. When the time comes for the exhaust work, I'll probably get them to drop the tank and fit it at the same time.

Done loads of them if your a mechanic it should be an easy job for you, if you just take your time and give yourself loads of room its pretty easy.

i propably will drop the tank out anyway,truth be told dont think i could avoid it,done loads yes but its tracking the replacement,unless maybe quoting the number of the pump when its out to c if there's a uk equivalent,bearing in mind i have only had th car 5 months and its my 1st yank tank and dont know where to get parts for the beast

Hi Guys Regarding BigBfer,s problem I also had a fuel pump problem on my iroc first symptoms were, occasional cut out. Eventually it stopped and would not pump. After confirming the electrical supply was fine to where it passes through the rear seat panel to tank.Checking the ground from the same point but other wire, revealed it had lost its ground return which was traced to a rotted eyelet screwed into the nearside/driver innersill down by the side of the seat as soon as this ground was remade the pump made the expected prime type noise,started soon as I hit the key.I hope this may help, saved me dropping my tank! thanks m8 but beggers belief i cured it today its finally running,turned out to be neither pump or iac but actually water in the fuel tank but really dirty water,so in the end im still gonna have to drop the fuel out to clean it that and replace the fuel filter

Glad you found the issue so quickly! Shame that you'll have to drop the tank still, but at least if you have trouble finding a pump it won't be a worry as yours is still good. Rocky who commented above is a good guy to know as he's a 3rd gen specialist, so i'm sure he can help you with some parts you may need as you get through the jobbies

yeah im glad its running,i shall keep that in mind with rocky its always handy to know a person with a lot of knowledge on the gen 3's
