has anyone tryed changing the temp of there engine for better output?

i read that chevy put a 225 degree thermostat in to decrese engine emmisions which drains output power and econemy.
and that some people in us change theres to 170 and get the fan to come in at 170 too

seeing how i was going to change all te cooling parts anyway, i was thinking of choosing a cooler thermo

just wondering if anyone had tryed it over here and what temp you went for and how do you get fans to kick in quicker

185 is usually Ideal,195 is permissable as well, these are under the boiling point of water,hence the use of a radiator pressure cap. 225 degrees is over the boiling point of water and real close to overheat conditions. this is why the gauge has a red section about 200 degrees. I would go 185 with a fan temp of 205 degreesand thats pushing it, your cooling system should easily maintain 185 unless theres A PROBLEM. Do you folks run unleaded gas ? if not the system is designed to being run on unleaded gas so emissions shouldnt be the reason for heading in this direction. Hope this clears some of this up for you.

People used to remove the stat beacuse of overheating and then have power and Sludge build-up problems.

This is a great topic. I've considered using a thermostat that will kick the fans off at a lower temperature than standard too. I fear that such a big engine needs good ventiliation no there are no visable ways to see heat escape and only the smallest of bonnet vents to allow cool air in.

The question is, it is a good idea or not ? I'm not bothered about fuel economy and if I get a few extra horses then I'm more than happy. What's the general concensus here ?

well i did just order a 180 degree thermostat but how do you change the temp the fan kicks in?
