Hi all - just joined, beer and cakes for everyone .... like the look of the site !
Am about to start renovating my IROC as it's been off the road for 16 months and left out in the snow etc which has played havoc with the paintwork on the roof and bonnet for some reason - no rust but the top coat is just coming off in lumps leaving the grey undercoat showing ...
Anyway, apart from a good paint job I'm considering some other fairly serious mods and was wondering if anyone could point me in the right directions...
Has anyone ever seen a proper wide-body kit for the 3rd Gen ? I've searched the internet quite a lot but haven't seen anything like I'm after - I'm wanting to know what fairly square arches would look like - similar but bigger/ squarer than those on a Manta 400 rally car ? Not sure about doing it yet until I've seen something similar to the picture I've got in my head !!!!
Also, the engine; she's a bit tired so I'm thinking serious re-build + ATI Pro-Charger or a high power crate motor - I want at least 600 but preferably >700hp - advice anyone who's done this sort of thing before? Brakes / suspension / drivetrain etc I don't have a problem with ...
Can anyone recommend somewhere good to do the interior as well ? Roof lining has gone in mine, but I might be interested in re-doing the whole thing.
Any help much appreciated....
Cheers all,
Tom

Im hoping to be set up with procharger very soon if that helps.
As for the kit there are a few available one is a wide arch conversion which is for early 3rd gens or the only other one is a ferrari style kit which if you do a google search for it should show you some pics.
Also our brake conversion bits will be completed by summer this year.

Hello and Welcome!

Wow- looks like you want to jump into this. 700bhp? Do you realise what else you will have to do to the car for it to accept that sort of power? For my money nearer the 400 mark is far more realistic and a pro charger courtesy of Rocky would be the place to start.

Also Rocky is pretty nifty with the paints too, worth getting him to look it over.

I have yet to see a well executed body kit for the IROCs, would andd could look mean if done properly though!

Good luck!

Welcome to the forum that's an ambitious project you're going to have there. have you done this sort of thing before? is there a reason you want to get 700hp or is it 'cos you can  That sort of power on the street will make the car a nightmare to use & could become tiresome after a while, but hey, each to his own

Good luck with it & post up some pics as you go

cheers...Nige

I take it from the responses that 700 is going too far then ?
I had (well still have at the moment but not for long hopefully) a manual Firebird with 440 at the wheels running on 4 Weber 48 IDAs - that's quite a pest to drive, but I thought an auto would be ok with more power ? Have I got it wrong ?
As before - any advice very much appreciated !!!

Well in a word yes. :)

You are talking Pro Street really. It's possible of course as is everything but it will cost you a shed load and you will end up with a car not worth more than £6k (probably).

It looks a nice tidy example from your small picture there.

There was a white TA in classic American recently for about £5k- Andy Pengally's car. That was ready to jump in and run 10's down at Santa Pod. Personally I would buy something already done and keep this one original and save loads of money.

You would probably need a TH350 box to handle that power and properly built with high stall torque convertor etc.. A Dana rear axle or similar, special prop shaft, new lower control arms, torque arm - (possibly a different geometry set-up), subframe connectors, full cage, brake upgrades, shock upgrades, spring upgrades etc. This is before you consider the engine.

Just my thoughts, probably forgot a few things :)

Cheers

Hi Tom,

Welcome to the forum :)

Sounds like an great project! pro-charging would be the way to go, unless you fancy the twin turbo route  As others have said, make sure the chassis can handle the power first

oooh weber 48's that's sweet 8-)

You can get a big hp monster to run sweet if you spend alot of money. Mine will be pushing 400 odd hp which TBH is plenty for our roads.
Feel free to email me if you have any questions or just need some advice.

I used to have a 600+ hp '55 Chevy that ran 10.57 secs @135 mph at the strip. To be honest it was a frighteningly quick car, but was a right pain in arse to drive on the street. You're constantly trying to tame the thing & on a long journey, it became very tiresome. Pull away from a standstill & the tyres would try to break loose, pull out of a junction, the tyres would spin up, cruise at 70mph & give it some throttle & the tyres would just break loose. It sounds like good fun, but the thing's constantly trying to kill you.

I'd say mid 400 hp is a nice figure for a street car that would be used regularly. You say you thought an auto would be ok with more power, the down side is, is that you loose a certain amount of control with an auto. To get the power to work you'd probably need a looser converter, my '55 had a 3500 stall speed, which means the car will barely move until you hit those sort of revs. At 3500 revs you'd probably be trying to put down around the 450+ hp mark on a 700hp engine. So, as you can imagine, try to pull from a standstill using all of the power you have in your Firebird at the moment & see what happens. Wheelspin!! Now imagine doing that everytime you move froma standstill. At least with a manual trans you can slip the clutch to get rolling.

As I said previously, it's your car & you should do what you feel is right. Having been there, done that I wouldn't even want to entertain it in a street car. Is there a reason as to why you want 700 odd hp?

cheers...Nige
