Just got myself a new toy for the summer, needs a few small jobs doing but nothing major bar fitting the rear wheelarch repair panel properly and removing the towbar ... 1987 IROC-Z28 305 tpi auto with B&M ratchet shifter.. Have to say i love it and love driving it after i adjusted the huge play out of the steering box, but i was expecting a bit more grunt, even if you work it hard with the ratchet shifter, it's not as poky as i was hoping, though it does leave good no11's and does lovely big smoking drifts with ease.. it been pampered by it's previous owner of many many years and came with a huge history file with bills for new LSD diff, recon gearbox ect ect, and virtually every consumable part you could imagine has been done including the rear arms and a good polybushing session, adds up to about £20k spent on the old girl over 14 years or so.. here she is... any mods for cheap easy power hikes...? tempted by a high comp 350 on mega squirt with ally heads but I'm determined to use this one not rebuild it! I have to say now before I'm rumbled that i also own a '72 mustang 351 that I'm rebuilding so I'm already a GM/Ford traitor, I don't take sides if it's got a V8 I love it! (that might explain the 72 Rover P5b V8and the 4.6 V8 Range Rover as well) Cheers Ed |

What a fantasticly uin-molested IROC. Welcome, she looks a peach! 305tpi? You can do the following for cheap power- Cut out the baffles in the air intake (below where the filters sit) Port your plenum & runners. Just need a new gasket kit and a dremel. Airfoil. Throttle body coolant bypass. 160 degree thermostat. To get more serious- Heads & or Headers LT4 cam or similar Exhaust system- Magnaflow. Any work you need doing, speak to my mate Rocky (on these boards) His company, American Technique, is just brilliant. I also have the 305 tpi. Yes it's a little slow but it's pretty good on fuel and very torquey low down. Most will say put a 350 in it, but you lose the cars history with that. I want to try and get as much power as poss out of my little 305. Appeals more to me somehow and I get to keep matching numbers! On a car as straight as yours it is a consideration. Cheers & welcome! Thanks! I restore cars for a living so any work needed will be done by yours truly, I'm going to stick with the 305 almost certainly as i don't want this one off the road at all over the summer. and i like to keep my cars original as possible without getting silly about it. is there somewhere i can read up about the tuning mods suggested e.g. airfoil? TB coolant bypass. what porting works best? It is tpi BTW I'm very tempted by a decent exhaust as well as it's a bit quiet for my tastes, but it already has no CAT and only one rear box, so i guess the next step is headers and twin pipes with minimal silencing.. mine still has the smog pump fitted and working but i guess this isn't a problem if it's binned when/if i fit headers? anyone know of some cheap used headers for sale? |

Rocky also does spare parts and is an official Magnaflow exhaust importer. Try this link for starters- http://www.thirdgen.org/techboard/tpi/5 ... -cars.html I've de-smogged mine as well as no cat. Only thing with De-smog is re-routing the belts (mine is serpentine but think being an 87 that yours is standard) Mine has twin cherry bombs so is too loud but a nice Magnaflow system makes them sound mean! |
