Only really necessary if you are going to be running a killer stereo system, add A/C or run any other kind of high electrical draining accessory :) So, stick with the same type as you have got (it will also be cheaper!)

It should be sufficent to use the original. Do you know what you are running now ????
One thing that should be understood, A GOOD battery has the ability to shut down an alternator
in other words a good battery wont demand from an alternator unless it needs it. An older weaker battery will cause the alternator to charge all the time . such as a battery that sits all the time till we break it out on the weekends. Just because it starts the car doesnt mean that it is a good battery.
there are auto parts stores that sell batterys that will offer a free test in order to determine wether you need a new one or not. Just one more thing ...the belt ! is it in good condition or is it old as well ? the glazed belt will squeal and just be squeaky when there is a strong demand from the alternator (like right after you just started it) and it will sound ugly till you get the charge back in the battery then quiets down a bit. Have a look around see what you find, you have posted about alternators before is it really the alternator ????????????
