For an easier life just junk it all and fit a Holley , then you don't need a choke or sensors and have something that is easy to tune, strip down and will eliminate a lot of possibilities from any running issues you are having
Funny story: the guy who sold it to me offered a Holley 750cfm and I said 'no'...

My logic was 'keep it simple, keep it stock'. And a cursory reading online told me the qjet was superior to the Holley in flow, power and economy...

I'm reluctant to junk it completely (I'm sure I'll eat my words in time!) but this car won't be a trailer queen - I'll probably do my 70mile a day commute in it every couple of weeks, so I'd rather not buy petrol I don't have to! That said, if it doesn't run properly I'm sure it'll drink petrol... ho-hum.

The wiring is a bit of an unknown - as I said before an alarm has been wired in fairly carelessly, plus there are a lot of redundant smog connectors floating around the engine bay, threatening to scold themselves on the exhausts...

I'm not much of an auto electrician, so I'll read up what I can and maybe entrust the work to a pro.

Curiously, the indicators stop working when the lights are on. I read somewhere this could be due to the wrong bulbs being used, but would this still apply on a car running euro-spec indicators? I hope there isn't some ridiculous wiring cock-up I need to correct!

The car still has no exhaust. I'm reliably informed that, despite being in a barn, it can be heard from at least half-a-mile away. Over a lawnmower.

It's gonna drink petrol regardless' it's a big old v8 ! The advantage with a. Holley is nearly every drag racer or yank owner will know how to repair them, rebuild them and adjust them, parts are readily available off the shelf and they are reliable and simple, I have never ever heard anyone say they are going to junk a Holley and fit a Rochester, or tune a Rochester, or use one for any other purpose than originality. I would bet you money that fitting a decent vac sec Holley would save you fuel instantly over what you have at the moment, a 750 is overkill for your needs so you did right in refusing that. It would also give you the peace of mind that any issues you have aren't with the carb

Can you guys offer me any advice on a couple of points?

The driver's seat back doesn't fix upright. The American forums seem to claim this is a deliberate design feature, but I doubt it'll get through an MOT! The passenger side does fix upright and appears to a have a spring that the driver's side doesn't. Any ideas on the best way to fix it?

Where do you source headlamps? I've got two outer lamps that I think have been converted to take H4 bulbs, and seem to have the correct spread-pattern, but the inner two are the sealed beam type, and are dead. I've googled endlessly, checked Rockauto, eBay etc, but can't find replacement H4 conversion units that would give the correct 'RHD' beam spread. Any tips?

Cheers!

Not sure on the seat issue.

With the lights I believe you can use VW Scirocco lights (the 80s one) and a couple of other Euro cars.. Look them up on Eurocarparts?

On the seats, it's a bit hard to explain, you have to lean the seat all the way back and on the outside side of the seat, where the mechanism is, you can put a small dowel type piece in there. That probably made no sense - i'll have to try and take some pics for you!

That'd be terrific if you could give me some guidance on the seat. Will that dowel lock the seat upright or just jam the inertia mechanism and allow the seat to be tipped using the lever on the back?

It does the latter, jam the mechanism, so you can still use the lever and let passengers in the back :) Though, after doing this a few times it can dislodge and then you're back to where you are now. May need to figure out a longer term solution, no one seems to know how to correctly fix it. I'll see if i can get some snaps / vids this luncthime, if no one has parked next to me in the carpark. Otherwise it will be the weekend.

I had the MOT done on the weekend and the guy didn't look at the interior, so didn't test the seats. Even so, i like the idea of the seat not folding forward incase of a heavy stop.
