Hello,

A simple question that seems to be more complicated than I thought…

What antifreeze are you supposed to use? I'm assuming my car is supposed to use Dex-Cool. Is there an equivalent in the UK, or is it ok to use the 5-year OAT stuff from Halfords?

I've not drained it to be sure, but the car currently seems to contain just water...

There should be a label on the coolant overflow tank, but it would help to know the year of your engine

Ah thanks - I didn't know to look for the label. I'll check it when I get the chance - the car's a mile away in a shed!

The year's 1985...

Hiya,

Usually it's a case of matching the colour of the one that's in there. Are you going to do a coolant flush? If so, no worries about mixing colours, you can start fresh

Mine is an 87 305 TPI so likely it's the same engine as yours?

I use Comma G48 in mine, use the same in the 2nd Gen Camaro which has a 74-76 350 in it. It's available from Halfords / local motorist discount centre and online. I got the 5 litre concentrate via ebay for under £30. You can also get it as ready mix if you prefer. Here's a 2litre concentrate: http://www.halfords.com/motoring/engine ... nt-conc-2l

I tend to steer clear of Halfords own brand oils and lubricants, just personal preference though, there's probably nothing bad about them.

Hope that helps!

Cheers,

Ray

Ah yes - Prestone! I'd seen that mentioned on the American forums, didn't occur to me I could get it over here.

I'll order some of that from amazon, or I'll grab some of that Comma G48 from Halfords if I get stuck.

Checked the capacity, is it really 15qts/18 litres?? Crumbs...

I only need to lower the level to get the intake manifold off to change the intake gaskets, but as I suspect it's just water (or extremely diluted!) I may as well go the whole way and change all the coolant.

Cheers for the help!
