Nice tip about the silicon litter. I actually save the little silicon packets you get in the box with electronics and put them around studio equipment. Maybe a good idea to put them in a car. I guess it would be a good idea to do that with any car actually, under the dash or something, help reduce the amount of moisture especially over winter, stops the car smelling damp if it doesn't get used a lot.

Ok so if you guessed heater hose, you get a point!

If you guessed ghost of christmas, you also get a point.

It looks like the ghost of christmas prison shanked the heater hose and created this lovely fountain for us to enjoy:

Of course, the heater hose that split is the one that is a bar steward to get to. Mainly, thanks to those measly air pipes :evil: I ended up ordering those ratchet 360 degree flare nut tools (cheers santa, but why did the money leave my account?) so i just need to track down a local supplier and then swap out that hose.

What PSI rated hose should i be replacing this with? And what temp? Rubber hose EPDM says -30 to 120c. Fans are supposed to come on at 105 and i've read some folks over on a 3rd gen based forum report running as hot as 240 - 260f (120-126c), which is basically at the limit. Surely the safety gap should be higher? 150c? Hate to think how close to failure a 120c hose is running water through it at 105c (or hotter, seeing as thats when fans kick in, so it would raise by a few c still).

I will be replacing the chunky hose, 3/4 inner diameter. The other hose is 5/8 ID incase anyone needs the spec.

Check the radiator cap, it will show the systems operating pressure, probably around 16 PSI.

Thanks Neil, most hoses say 60psi or more, so should definitely be ok. The temp bit makes me not so happy, looking at silicone hoses instead, they are ok for up to 180c so much more comfortable, plus a thicker wall.

I will need to order some (going to replace the other hose too and by pass the throttle body as it doesn't get below -5c here at the worst of times (lowest i remember was -3c) so in the meantime i'll get some standard epdm rubber hose from eurocar parts, £4.44 online reserve and collect for a 1 metre length.

Hands are nice and cut up. Guess what got in the way the whole time... air pipes :evil: Ratchet flare set arrived today so will be getting rid of the pipes hopefully this weekend.

The hose that needs replacing is the 3/4 (19mm) one and its a short hose, that goes into a metal pipe that run along the chasis rail and then goes to a rubber hose to the rad. Had to get a round grip tool thing on the hose and swivel it as it had started rusted and needed some convinving to get it to detach. I could reuse the metal pipe but it's pitted and rusty around the flanged end so i don't know how much life is left in it. I think that running a silicon hose, about 130cm length should be ok. Less joints plus a higher temp hose. The current hose has a sharp 100 degree turn in it and it's leaking at the outside edge so i will try and run the new hose so that the hot water doesn't hit such a short and sharp bend straight away. Can't be any good for a hose, as has been found out.

Picking up hose tomorrow, fitting on Sunday as i won't be in tomorrow. Will keep you guys updated. Thanks for the help and advise as always.

Installed the new hose today. The thicker one 3/4 inch / 19mm is the return hose from the matrix to the rad. Changed it out, didn't reuse the stock metal tube as one of the ends was quite on it's way out. Ran a 1 metre length straight from matrix to rad. The old hose was well on its way out - it pretty much fell apart when flexing it. Guess that will be a job for spring - new upper and lower rad hose, flush the cooling system (who knows when it was done) and change the heater pipes to silicone ones.

Changed the battery too, the one in there seemed a lower spec than the new one so hopefully this will run happier. Changed out the defroster swtich with its new capacitor, not tested yet.

Time to get back on the 2nd gen...
