I don't think the tranny oil has ever been changed in the 3rd gen, so did some searching for what would be the recommended fluid to use. According the shop manual (in this link http://www.thirdgen.org/techboard/trans ... anual.html ) it states a part number that is for this stuff http://www.performanceoilsltd.co.uk/ams ... ssion.html which is a 5w 30. Seems a bit of a low rating, as all of the gear oils i've ever seen are considerably higher at 75w/80 etc. Tranny is a manual 5 speed, stock that came with the car. Does such a low viscosity seem right?

I've got that Amsoil in mine... I was recommended to use it by a few people to use it as it's a higher spec version of GM's own Syncromesh fluid...

GM calls for Dexron 2 ATF in it's 5 speed manual transmissions, not any sort of 5-30 oil

I think it's suitable replacement for the sythentic Syncro GM trans fluid fluids, which I think the later model T56 cars sometime are specc'ed with, maybe your car doesn't need this.. Is it T5 box ray ?
I did research this before I used it.

(mind you my gearbox did need a 1st gear and selector rebuild last year, but fault of dodgy clutch mechanism I thought)

thanks for the quick replies!

I'm doing an engine oil change tomorrow morning (if it doesn't rain) so i will be under the car and will look out for numbers on the tranny to figure out which box it is. I believe it's the standard stock tranny for '87, 5 speed hooked up to a 305 tpi.

I'll post back what i find in the morning and then we'll know for sure what model it is...

Cheers Rocky! I didn't get a chance to work on the TA this weekend, spent it all on the Camaro. Maybe next weekend / the long bank holiday weekend afterwards i should be able to get under the car. Will report back soon!
