Hi guys,

I've had to fit another 305 TPI engine in my IROC after the big ends went in the previous engine.

We've done a few light mods, including fitting an LT1 cam & headers. It seems to get the most out of the changes we'll have to tune the PROM chip - is there anyone in the UK that can do this?

Cheers.

Neil

Cheers, Mick.

I have heard about those upgrade chips, and that they can tailor make them to the mods that have been done. Have you had any experience with these?

I've also heard they're not much good unless you're tuning them to a specific car there and then. Difficult to know having not been through this before!

Neil

Yeah, let us know. After watching Wheeler Dealers last night I am keen to know. They got the RWHP from 204 or so to 260 or so. Mega change but it was a turbo Scooby WRX. Not sure non-turbo cars respond so well.

Don't forget to tell your insurers :)

'Fraid I can't shed any light on the performance aspect at the moment as the trans is slipping and I can't give it a proper road test. I did take it out for short drive before and after the chip install and didn't notice a difference - but probably wouldn't anyway with the autobox being next to knackered.

Despite that I definitely noticed a power increase over the last engine...can't wait till it's back on the road proper :D

The chip's done what I wanted it to do though in sorting out how the engine runs. Before the chip, the idle was all over the place and it surged quite badly but the chip has settled it down and it idles quite smoothly now (probably because EGR, AIR etc is now disabled).

Will give you another update in due course!

Can finally pass judgement on the chip I got, having now got the car out of storage, MOTd and back on the road.

All in all, not recommended

Unless you've done so many mods on your engine that it won't run right without a retune, or you're prepared to buy the kit and learn to fine tune your PROM chip yourself, I'd say don't bother.

I've done two out of the three best mods to do on a third gen (cam and exhaust) which have added decent power - and seems best to keep it simple. Now just need to get decent heads on it! These PROM chips bought off the shelf seem to be like others have said, snake oil...

I would only recommend if you do so much that the car doesnt run on standard chip, this will be ok to get you mobile but you should get your own one remapped but you will need rolling road time also which can work out expensive.
