Although the pictures I first posted of my '81 Z28 seem tasty enough...

...there's a few imperfections in the paint I figured I try and tidy up myself.

Firstly the wing mirrors, plenty of groves in the paint and the edges revealing the original silver...

Plus they hadn't been sprayed properly underneath...

A good sand with 1200 grit for keying...

Aerosol gloss black...

Cured then wet sanded from 1500 grit to 3000, Meguiars Ultimate Compound then finished with Meguairs Ultimate Polish. All orange peel removed, no scratches and no swirls, just the lacquer to apply.

Overall I'm pretty pleased with the results, the depth in the colour is good, reflection and finish also :)

Beautiful finish but, I think you are meant to key the black, lacquer it and then polish - as it is the lacquer will have trouble sticking to such a high polished finish. Not trying to be clever but hopefully useful for future ref.

Thanks :) I was very surprised such a good finish appeared.

I have heard this. My dilemma is this, if I key the surface via wet sanding of 1500, 2500 or 3000 paper the surface will become dull and scratched. Surely the dull surface will show through the lacquer??

Agreed :) I was very dubious at first but now I'm convinced a good result is certainly possible.

You would think so, and I thought it was odd the first time I saw it. The shine comes from the smooth top surface, anything below will just be colour showing through the top layer, which you can make nice and thick with multiple layers, so you can smooth it down nicely for a top shine.
