Hi everyone, I'm new to the board, and thought I'd just let myself be known to the other 2nd Gen owners out there. Mine's a 79 Z28, still with original motor and gearbox. Had it for 2 1/2 years now. On a Q plate as brought into the UK from Yemen in the 90s, and at the time they didn't bother to work out the year of manufacture. Also means the speedo is in KMH, so a slightly odd car. Looks great (to me) but is very much a work in progress, with bits of rust to be dealt with once I get everything underneath the bonnet straight, which is nearly there. Was at Speedfest yesterday and saw a few board members cars about - very nice!

Welcome! That looks like one sweet 79, have you got any specs on the engine? What work have you done under the bonnet, let's see some photos!

There's plenty of knowledge on this forum to help you with any repairs you might need to make, a little rust here and there is normally not too much of a challenge with a few top tips ;)

Have you ever thought about getting it off a Q plate onto an age appropriate one?

Looking forward to seeing some more photos of this car

Regarding the q plate - how easy is it to get it in an age related plate?

Hi guys, thanks for the kind words on the car. It's very much a work in progress, it's the original 350 motor, it had some odd flooding and overheating problems, which seem to have been solved by a proper tune and fuel pressure regulator.

It's had new springs on all four wheels, new fuel tank, new dash, work on the brakes, headliner and rear bumper.

Probably going to need a transmission rebuild sooner rather than later, as its started to leak a little.

Still turns heads and sounds great though!

howdy and welcome

Car looks lovely... Good to see you've got it running well too.

I think you can apply for age related plates now, as I think Q plates were only issued if there was some doubt as to the year of manufacture. Not sure if you'd need to provide proof somehow..

Welcome aboard an nice motor too
As for getting your car a proper reg plate i did it for my first american motor that i had a 71 dodge charger :D Before the www really kicked off !!
I had to join a club for the life of me i cant remember which one it was But they had resources to decode my chassis number then they broke it down and put it on club headed paper which i sent off with a form from the post office with a small fee and that was it few weeks later new docs with new reg
I think on here somewhere there is a decode section ???
So you could make up a club headed paper letter with your vin decoded on it pop to the post office get a form an send it off
Or you maybe able to do it all online thesedays ???

I did a bit of a Google and it looks like you need a club to authenticate the year of the car. Looking at the vin number all looks in order, and I have a copy of the build sheet. I'm going to drop the dvla a line and see what they need - does anyone know the secretary of the club?

This club used to do the same thing, quite a few years ago... same deal - pay a small fee and the vin is decoded and sent on headed paper etc. I think the popularity for this has decreased as it can be done online now. However, if you do require (based on your call with DVLA) club headed paper, then i'm sure this can still be arranged. The club secretary is Tim Boles, username: TopCat. If you shoot him a PM he i think he can take care of this for you.

For a Camaro VIN decoder, you can find one at this link:
