My 229 v6 isn't exactly the quickest thing and I would like to upgrade from my tired 2 barrel rochester dualjet. Ideally I would like to go for Edelbrock or Holley or Weber but I can't seem to find anything on the web regarding how carbs are rated or what size I need or where to get a minifold/adapter for the v6. I also thought about a triple carb set up but I cant find a triple manifold for this engine anywhere but I have heard triple carbs barely give any more performance and are just a waste of money. So really what I'm wondering is what size or number Edelbrock I need also if it has to be 2 barrel or can I have 4 barrel on this engine? |

I know I shouldn't do this but here goes: 229 would be happy with something small like a 390 Holley. Readily available used for cheapish money. Problem is the intake situation but personally ( I'm weird) I would rework the stock intake to accept the Holley and see how that goes. Last resort would be a big 2-barrel like a 500 Holley (4412) which would probably bolt on, maybe needing an adaptor. I just like messing with budget hotrod stuff to go fast. Cheers, Martin |

I used to run a 2 barrel Holley 500 cfm on a 307 in a 2nd gen and found it very good ! I tend to agree with Martin, there is not a lot of choice for your V6 and it is probably best to try to find some cheap parts and adapt to your intake manifold ...you may be pleasantly surprised and save some money as well

Yeah adapting my manifold actually sounds easier than trying to find one haha  . Though maybe I'll get lucky and what I buy will bolt strait on. So what is the problem with just wacking on a bigger carb like a 500? Can I just put on any size and set it up using the mixture screws to suit? I would rather go Edelbrock than Holley but I don't really know what's better. I guess I've just seen more Edelbrock stuff on tuned cars. I'm just dreaming of Edelbrock rocker covers and filter and want it all to match tbh . Are the only numbers I need to think about the cfm?

Personally I would not wast time or money on it as it's simpler to just find a cheap small block Chevy motor and put that in and the you can modify cheaper and easier. just putting a carb on wont give you a noticeable power increase, the heads and cam are designed for economy, so without spending a lot of money it just wont do very much for the power output of you v6. There are HO V6's but they have cost A lot of money to develop like the Buick Gran National V6 or the Brabham tuned 3rd Gen Firebird, both invole Turbo's and all the electric's to go with them, I've also had the Montecarlo V6 Tubo, but is wasn't that exiting. The 3800 II fitted to the 4th gen is a powerfull little beast (rework Buick motor) but it will again need all the electronic to work correctly, and has reliability problem's.

I will probably just stick on a nice new carb for some reliability really as my Rochester is gunky and all over the place. Just until I can find a 350. I probably wouldn't bother with the 305 if I'm changing the engine anyway. Is it literally plug and play or will I need to uprate the brakes and fuel pump and rad etc? |

For what it's worth, in the For Sale section, FlakMonkey has just listed a v8 350 (bored .60 over) with Fuel Injection. Looks like a very impressive motor . |

That does look impressive. Little out of my price range for the time being though. Plus I dislike technology. I prefer carbs tbh. But I bet that thing has some grunt!

If you plan on changing the engine do not go for a 305, hold out for a 350 as it is a much better engine and will deliver better performance as well as reasonable economy if you build it with the right cam, heads, intake and carb .For normal street use the standard brakes are fine, but you will need a fuel pump meant for a 350 stock mechanical is all you need. A 600 or 650 Holley will be good and the whole setup is fairly easy to set up

Sweet. Thanks, I may well do that. I wasn't going to bother with the 305 anyway. I will be putting my Cadillac up for sale soon to fund the Camaro.
