Post subject:  Just bought an 81 camaro with 4 speed manual - which engine?

Well hello guys, Glad to see there is a UK Forum!

I have just bought a 1981 camaro, with 305 and 4 speed manual, trouble is the engine has so many bits missing its a lost cause, can anyone help with suggesting which engine will fit the box?

Im guessing a 350 chevy will?, any ideas if a 350 oldsmobile will fit the box?

Any help would be great or if anyone could point me towards someone that may be able to supply engine and ancilliaries.

Thanks People.

Hi & welcome to the forum. TBH, I'd stick with a Chevy motor as the parts are plentiful. You'll find that the Chevy bellhousing won't fit directly to the Olds engine, plus there are numerous differences between Olds & Chevy thast'll make it a pain to swap over hth

cheers...Nige

hello and welcome.. great to see another 2nd gen Camaro joining in, and a manual too !!!

As already said, stick with the Chevy engine, as it'll slot straight in without any issues, and will be cheaper to buy and get parts for than anything else..

You can see them for sale all over the place, ebay, gumtree, Rods n' Sods, American car garages, etc... depending on what you want, 2nd hand, rebuilt, etc.. Real Steel often has some running 2nd hand engines in stock.

Thanks for the info guys, struggling to find anything anywhere near my budget,
Is it possible to get a gen 3 engine and all ancillaries but remove the injection system and run a carb, or is this a major task??

Thanks guys, glad I've had some responses.

Yes this is possible i currentley have a 1989 305 and the rad from the 3rd Gen, with the injection system re-moved and a carb fitted. Fits into my 77 no problem and runs great. Though i would go for the 350, as that gives you the option of turning it into a 383 if you want even more power.
