Post subject: | LIGHT CONVERSION FOR UK MOT |
Hi folks. Well it's mid life crisis time for me so I had a sudden rush of blood to the head when I saw a beautiful restored 1970 RS SS 350 auto for sale from a dealer in the USA. Without doing any proper investigations on market value etc I went ahead and bought the car basis the photo's on the dealers web site and my gut feeling of what I thought the car was worth. Well she arrived at Southampton this week and I collected her yesterday. She does look good in the flesh and I am very happy with her. I was impressed with the power and a bit overawed by the sensitive throttle response - I only took her for a lap of the car park at the docks but was as nervous as hell driving her up on the back of the car transporter I hired - one over zealous prod at the throttle and I reckon I would have cleared the truck cab in a jump the Dukes of Hazzard would have been proud of!! Anyway - now the important part - I need to get the lights set up for UK registration. Being the RS I want to use the inner front driving lights at indicators and convert the headlights to side light and head light operation (and convert them to halogen at the same time). I know on Mustangs you use the good old Mimi headlight units - is it the same for Camaro's?? The rear lights look like they may be more of a problem. I want to utilise the original lights but don't want to lose the reversing lights. I met a guy at the Beaulieu Car Show in June who had indicators working from the same clear lense as the reversing lights - he hadn't done the work himself and couldn't explain how it was done - any ideas? If anyone has a wiring diagram for these mods that would be great. I have yet to buy any manuals for the car yet - yes this really was an impulse buy!! - I wasn't very impressed with the Haynes Manual for my Mustang is the one for the Camaro any good? Is there any other Repair Manual for a Camaro anyone would recommend? Any help gratefully received. All the best. |

Hi Shaun - thanks for the response. A cooperative MOT guy eh?? now that's a rare beast! I really don't think I will get away with it in my area but I may have a wander round to my usual MOT station and discuss the possibilities!! |

Just about to tackle the issue too Here's your wiring diagrams: http://www.nastyz28.com/camaro/diagram.html My plan is to also keep the reverse lights too and then put the indicator light within the reverse light via orange super bright LEDs from somewhere like http://stores.ebay.co.uk/acepartsperformancelighting Looking at doing the same at the front You have 3 options here 1) either use a Mini light because it has the extra holder in there for the sidelight, so you then utilise the cars sidelight housing and make it the indicator. 2) drill into the current headlight and add the sidelight, do the indicator as above 3) leave headlight alone, make sure you have a clear lens sidelight and add an orange LED into the sidelight housing so that acts as your sidelight and idinicator Let us know how you get on! |

Hi folks - thanks for the responses and many thanks "78 Camaro" for the wiring diagram and suggestions. I like your idea of the bright LED lights for both the rear and front - that should mean that I can keep the car looking as original as possible. I'm a total technophobe (hence only computer access weekdays 9-5!) so uploading photo's probably outside my capability but here's the link to the Dealers past inventory with my pride and joy on it. http://www.classiccarstudio.com/1353/19 ...
