My 77 failed its Mot today....various minors but one potential awkward to sort.....tester said the side lights can't be combined indicators and side lights(mine have clear lenses and orange coated bulbs)...he said that when the side lights are on tnbey must show white light...can't be mixed with orange light from the indicators( I'm assuming the bulbs are dual filament as they flash and also stay constant when side lights are on.....so advice please...also said the exhaust is fouling park prake cable.( the cable sits below the exhaust acting like a bracket for it.)...

I, like many others, moved the sidelights to the main headlamp which is just a standard 7" unit with a sidelight built in.

It's annoying but only needs doing once.

My silverado has orange sidelights and has passed all it's old mots. Seems some places are more observant than others....

As for the exhaust... What does the actual failure note say? The parking brake cable on these cars seems to rub on everything under the car. Lol

Same here. I've had orange driving on previous Camaro and only got mentioned once at MOT, but talked hime round.
The hand brake cable sits like that, yes it's a crap design but that's how it is... !

Another one that got picked up by previous testers was the play in the rear axle shafts, as this is normal but many don't like it..

As Flak Monkey suggests, changing the headlamps out to ones with a sidelight in them is the best solution. I did the same on my 2nd gen, 7" for a Mini works perfect, paid about £30 - £40 delivered, with all bulbs included. Need to splice some wires but only takes an hour to sort out the wiring. The front is dual filament as you suggest. There are 2 wires, brown and blue. Blue is the indicator and brown is the running light, if i remember correctly so just cut the brown wire, run it to the new clear sidelight and add a ground.

My 3rd gen passed its MOT for years with Amber running lights, same guy and this year he picked up on it.

Interested in the exhaust note too, they do rub on the exhaust by (bad) design on dual exit exhausts. I added some brackets to help guide the cable to avoid rubbing the exhaust. I can take pics if it helps, i did it to get rid of the clanging sound.

I had the same on the 3rd gen MOT this year, luckily a guy the tester knew was walking past, the tester asked him to come and have a look and the guy walked half way and said "that's a floating axle that's normal" and that was that, so that was lucky. Nice that there are people about that know this stuff off the top of their heads. Otherwise, it would be quite a conversation explaining rear axles and how they work :lol:

Cheers guys!...ill search those headlights...i had given it to the guy who deals with my daily and he said he looked up online and ut said there had to be separate side lights...no mention of the axle though...he does resto work on british classics but not yanks...so maybe not the best to have used for mot.

On my 77 my indicators on the rear are where the reverse lights should be, side indicators work correctly. Front indicators come on solid with the side lights and then flash when indicating. I've never had any issues getting through an MOT, might be worth trying another garage.
