Post subject:  Looking to buy a 3rd or 4th gen

Hello,

I'm looking to scratch a V8 itch, and I've always quite fancied a 3rd gen Camaro (blame the little MASK toy I had as a kid!)

I'm looking for a V8 manual - they seem pretty rare. Does anyone know of any for sale, or have one and is considering selling?

I would consider a 4th gen, but also must be a V8 manual.

I'm based in the Southeast, so hopefully someone not too far away...

Any pointers or advice is welcome!

Many thanks,

Neil

My pointer would be that a 4th gen has an extra 85hp, is made from plastic so is lighter, faster and not so likely to get tin worm, plus the addition of airbags and a few other creature comforts :-) . That's if you are looking at a standard car and not something silly

Manuals are way rarer than autos, but do turn up occasionally, and often not particularly more expensive.,..
4th gen is generally regarded as the better car, but I personally prefer the 3rd gen looks.. :D

good luck with the search...

Apologies for the double post, not the best start!

From what I've heard the 4th gen is the better, faster car... but I prefer the looks of the 3rd gen!

Would I be better off posting a request in the 3rd gen section? Have you any advice on where to find cars? I had been wondering about contacting some American car showrooms to see if they every take in 3rd gen cars in part exchange...

Cheers,

Neil

I do love the look of the 3rd gen and had one a few years back however since owning my 4th gen SS im converted ! not sure how genned up you are but the 4th gen up till 1997 was fitted with the LT1 engine running about 290 bhp, these are the ones with the recessed headlights. After 1997 they did a facelift and changed the headlights amongst other things, they also changed the engine to the LS1 which is much more powerfull then its predecessor the LT1 , they claimed around 340 ish bho as stock but they underplayed the power either for insurance or to make corvette owbers feel they were getting a better deal, i witnessed a stock LS1 engined camaro that had been owned from new go on the dyno and made 450BHP!! completley stock engine and everone thought the dyno had broken. If you can find one and dependent on your finances go for the SS model in the 4th gen, The conversions were all done by a company called SLP and the fully specced up versions are quite a tool that would be at home on the dragstrip, doing a track day or cruising about. Third gens are abundant at the moment as are 4th gens and for a standard V8 i would be looking at paying around the 3-4k mark for a good example, whereabouts are you based?

I'm based down on the marshes in Kent - quite a long way from anywhere!

I'm still pretty new to camaros, so thanks for the info about the 4th gens. If I could find a manual one at the right price, I'd still be pretty interested, even if I prefer how the 3rd gens look.

One thing about the 3rd gens is the driving position. I've only had to chance to drive one once, briefly, and I was a bit put off by being sat so low I felt I was struggling to place the car on the road. Looking back, I now see the intimidating driving position as part of the car's 'muscle car' appeal. How do the 4th gens compare?

My 4th gen is just as low as a 3rd gen if not lower, I would also suggest checking the "sold" prices on ebay before spending your money, I see an awful lot of 3rd gens on there advertised at the 4-5k mark for sale which I believe makes the prices look artificially high as they never seem to achieve that price

Yes, I've seen quite a few cars at that price that seem to hang around.... I've even see a few priced at considerably more!
