Hi all, just found this forum and decided to join. I have been looking for some advice regarding my cars gearbox. At the minute the car won't kickdown, and shifts really high (about 4k rpm) however the box doesnt seem to slip and the oil doesnt smell burned. Has anyone had similar issues with the 700r4 ? I bought the car thinking it would be easy to find a replacement box however they are quite hard to find for sale so far. |

here are a couple of pics of the Camaro and also, one of my 69 mustang fastback the camaro will be spot on once I can figure out whats wrong with the gearbox, spoke to an auto box specialist and he suggested it could be the 'governor' just waiting to get it booked in! |

I think it´s your throttle valve cable, detent cable also called kickdown cable, needs adjustment. Some trouble shooting hints, http://www.transmissioncenter.net/700R4.htm Nice nasty black Camaro... |

Thanks for the link! Theres a lot of useful info! Quote: Look to see if the throttle valve cable (passing gear cable) is connected to the carburetor or throttle body in the case of fuel injection. The cable must be hooked up and adjusted correctly at all times, because this controls the pressure. When you step on the gas pedal the throttle valve cable turns the transmission pressure up. This is how to make the adjustment on the cable. With the throttle wide open, the cable must be fully pulled out at the exact same time. The adjustment is made at the bracket. You must push a button in or pull a button out to move the cable housing forward or rearward. Moving the cable housing to the rear raises the pressure. Be careful, if you adjust the pressure too low you could burn the clutches.
I checked this and can confirm that at WOT the tv cable is pulled out fully, so guessing that this is correctly adjusted? Also noticed this info Quote: If your transmission doesn’t shift out of first gear or shifts hard at too high a R.P.M. this doesn’t always mean you have a problem. This could be a stuck throttle valve caused by a small piece of trash. This sometimes happens after a rebuild. Sometimes the throttle valve can be unstuck without removing the valve body. Get up to about 20 to 30 M.P.H. and hit the gas pedal on and off hard with your foot. This might do the job. If that doesn’t work remove the throttle valve cable end from the throttle, with the motor at idle in park, pull the cable in and out very fast, this might work, if not the valve body must be removed by a transmission shop to be unstuck.
Those symptoms sound very much the same as the trans on ours, so possibly that could be the case, have tried "booting it" though and that has not made any difference so will ask the trans specialist to look into that hopefully next week when it goes there.

Yep, I agree with Malc on this, TV cable issue. Cheers, Martin |

at full throttle the TV cable is fully extended and pulled tight, however it seems very slack at partial throttle or idle. I am not that much good with mechanical stuff so as I say its booked in with a local place who rebuilt a 700R4 for my mates G20 day van recently, I just hope it is a cable issue or something else easier than a full gearbox rebuild. |

Probably worth rebuilding, or phone around one of the usual yank garages to see if they have one lying around... pretty sure Autopontiac had one a while back, or somewhere like Alders Automatics could probably do an exchange.. |
