Post subject: | 67 owner, maybe?? |
Hi, Just thought I'd post on here as I'm in the process of buying a 67 rolling project over in Texas. Looking to getting the restoration done over there and then import it here. Is that wise? I'm trying to work out if doing the work in the states and then shipping here would mean the value of the car would need to be declared? 10% import duty +20VAT would certainly kill any chances of getting it over once valued at $20000 or so. The purchase price is going to be around $7000 so its a rolling project car at the moment. So the bill of sale would be that, and that would be on the receipt. The information out there about project cars is fairly slim. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks all. |

I'm guessing it depends on who you know in either country to do the restoration. You're correct that you'll save money on import tax/VAT by bringing it over at much lower initial value (which you'll need to prove by purchase receipt or similar). |

I would be inclined to ship it in as is - but with all the required bodyparts unwrapped stacked inside the car- and badges etc from NPD |

Thanks for the replies guys. I'm getting the car for $8500 all in, west coast car so in good condition. Minimal resto needed, and comes with a stack of parts. I was looking at doing this a few years ago and most shipping companies said you could get it in via the BTI scheme, which would mean 5% vat rather than the full load. Sounded a bit of a wangle though. Cross fingers I'll get this. Not sure how the title will transfer me being in the uk, but I'll post pics up once the deal is done. I have a guy over there who has a good rep who's going to do the work for me. Many thanks. |

The BTI scheme is very helpful on the pocket for importing Classic Cars. Also great for importing parts - as your car is classed as historic, hence no road tax, the parts that go with it are supposed to be tax exempt too (minimised). If you have the time / will power, go for it Good luck! http://customs.hmrc.gov.uk/channelsPort ... e=document Quote: HMRC will allow the car to be imported under the BTI scheme, the main factors are if the car is no longer in production, over thirty years old and unmodified from its original form
I would be tempted to do the resto over here, to help keep it 'unmodified'. Also, this was interesting to read: Quote: To get BTI, you just fill in form C103, send it to HMR&C and wait up to 7 weeks for the decision. If they agree that 9705 is the correct classification, then you will get a customs document stating this as a fact that must be recognised by all EU countries for 6 years and duty and taxes will be charged on this basis. If HMR&C decide that another category is more appropriate, they will tell you. You haven't saved anything until HMR&C have made their decision and, if the decision is the same as would have been made at the port of entry, you will have saved nothing. Asking for a certain classification is not the same as getting it, as your linked page suggests. Applying for BTI will not avoid duty or taxes. It will just give you the information about what will be due. If duty and taxes are a major issue, it would be prudent to get the BTI before finalising the import. http://customs.hmrc.gov.uk/channelsPort ... e=document It is for HMR&C, not you or me or anyone else on this forum (or the shipping agent) to decide on the correct duty classification of the vehicle. I wish you luck in getting the classification that you want but 9705 tends to only be applied to museum pieces. You will find lots of very specific and very useful information on the forums of The Classic Corvette Club UK. This thread, for example, mentions one car that was classified under heading 9705 and two cars that were not (ignore the "posted today" tags as the comments are old - when VAT was 17½%). http://www.corvetteclub.org.uk/viewtopi ... rel=-10000 Quote: I have now discovered a scheme which allows any unmodified vehicle over the age of 30 years to be imported DUTY FREE and with only 5% V.A.T. The scheme is called the BTI scheme and more info can be found by following the link below;
http://www.shipmycar.co.uk/2011/04/bti- ... d-imports/ Just saved myslf £3,510. Incidentally, although very helpful, I found shipmycar.co.uk's quote to be very dear for shipping, if you're |

Hi, Thanks for the information. I spoke to a certain shipping company today and they said the vehicle would have to be original as it was factory finished. Soon to be mine, hopefully crossfingers, 67 was a straight 6 but the guy dumped the engine and trans in 84. It's been under storage since then. So they said I'd have to fill the form in to the best of my knowledge, which I took to imply that if there was a v8 in there when I bought it then it came with a v8. Not sure to what degree the HMRC checks up on the VIN etc, paper work, or even if it states on the title deeds what the car came with. I guess I'll have to get the form and see. Well all that is a way off as the car needs body work and paint, and all the parts putting in along with an engine etc so it's going to be a long haul process, but I hope to have a nice Liberty Red 67 at the end of the day. I have pictures which I will post up as soon as the deal is done and the car is at the resto garage until then I'm too paranoid about it not going through. I'm glad I thought "I wonder if there's a Camaro Club in the UK?". Cheers! |

Hi & welcome to the forum If this car is being modified the you really need to bring it in as it is & get it restored over here, unless it's restored to its original specification. ANY modifications from the original specification "could" make it impossible to register in this country. Quite a few people have been caught recently trying to import cars in from the US with modifications & they can't register them. http://www.uk-hotrods.co.uk/v2/rodding_ ... ehicle.php hth cheers...Nige |

Hi Nige, Thanks for the link. That sounds pretty awful. Are we allowed no more fun anymore? Granny state! Fortunately im not goin down that route. This car won't be modified in anyway apart from an engine and transmission which will be a carb era v8 motor. I was thinking of putting some updated front suspension to improve the handling, I think from Detroit speed or similar, but going by the link that may not be wise. Although the kit they offer doesn't look in anyway different. I guess I could always change that once it's over here and registered. The body work is all original bar one rear quarter panel. Im sticking to original balero Red with original red interior, more than likey orginal type ralle wheels. ItI won't be a pro street. So I'd hope that would go through ok. I knowit's ovmay get clobbered with the import as the engine wont be the original 6cyl, but i can but give it a try. I was going to ask about insurance whilst its over there but ive not had time to inquire. it will be covered during shipping but not during the resto. Maybe covered under the shops ins? Though maybe I can get something extra? Thanks again. |

Ok, I've found this out after surfing around the HMRC site trying to find out exactly what's what with importing a classic: Part of Section 11.4 - Items of historical significance Motor vehicles which: - possess a certain scarcity value - are not normally used for their original purpose - are the subject of transactions outside the normal trade in similar utility vehicles - are of high value, and - illustrate a significant step in the evolution of human achievements or a period of that evolution. In view of the fact that a motor vehicle is basically a utility article with a relatively short life, and subject to constant technical development, then the foregoing preconditions underlying the above judgments, in so far as they are not obviously contradicted by the facts, can be taken to apply in respect of: - vehicles in their original state, without substantial changes to the chassis, steering or breaking system, engine etc, at least 30 years old and of a model or type which is no longer in production Erm, not entirely sure what that means, but there's a number to ring. So hopefully they'll be able to advise on the situation. If you wish to import a vehicle covered by the guidelines above, you are advised to telephone the Classification Advice Line on telephone: 03000 513777 Option two, before making a purchase to ensure that your vehicle will be eligible for the reduced rate of VAT at import. |
