Post subject:  The re-building starts!
Hi Everyone,

The Camaro is now back from the 4 stage stripping process and the results were pretty much as expected, requiring new rear quarters, front floor pans, drivers side windscreen pillar and rear inner/outer arches. I'm in the process of ordering the required panels and wondered is there a recommended company that people have had great experience with in the past? I was thinking of ordering directly from the US?

I have also been looking into the process of registering the car with the DVLA as it was imported from the US and getting a 68 period correct number plate. I have spoken to the DVLA and emailed the Government website but both have given different procedures, has anyone any experience with this and know the required process? Does the vehicle have to be completely factory standard to apply for a period correct number plate?

Thanks in advance, looking forward to the challenge of the re-build and getting to know you all along the way.

It needs to be fairly standard - as long as it's within the 8 point system it should be ok... :)

Thanks Flak Monkey, the 8 point reference is just what I was looking for as a reference to make sure the car stays eligible for a 68 year plate. I will order a DVLA Import Pack, when I spoke to them on the phone they mentioned that they only need a valid MOT but just didn't sound correct.

Looks like a promising start .
Your shell seems remarkably sound in many of the usual problem areas - around the front of the roof, drip rails, the area in front of the windshield ...dry state car ?
I have used Ecklers for many parts and been pleased with the parts and prices .
Always good to start on something clean without lots of old paint, body filler and rust, that way you can see exactly what is needed .

Yes, certainly looks like it hasn't been left out to rot. The window areas are usually the first to go. Looks like it's had a couple of dings, judging by the holes drilled for a dent puller. Looks like someone went into the back of it at lower speed, based on the holes / ripples on the rear panel, nothing that isn't easy to fix though.

Certainly can attest to that :) Looks like some partial floor plans will do the trick and then some good sheet metal work in a few areas and it will shape up nicely :thumbup:

Hi Firebird 68,

I import the vehicle from Pennsylvania but it had been stored in a garage since the 80's due to a blown engine which was sent away to be machined and was never put back together.

Thank you for the reference of Ecklers, I have contacted them and hopefully can put together a large order (possibly a container full of parts) to start this build. It makes such a difference starting with a clean shell like you mentioned...not to mention smells a lot better from all the wasps, mice and who knows what had nested in it!

Hi 78 Camaro,

The windscreen pillar on the drivers side has slight pin holes which I will address but the rest of the window areas are solid. I had noticed the filler in the quarter panels but the rear ripples/holes were a surprise, you never know what to expect as the Americans love to use the filler! I plan on ordering new sheet metal for the floors, both rear quarters and entire rear of the vehicle...will bring it back to as good as new :)
