I bought a new starter for my 68 camaro 427 small block this week but on trying to fit it it would,nt line up properly. On checking it out my car has an adappter plate between the engine an the block causing the the starter to not go back into the bellhouseing enough.I returned the starter to the dealer and exchanged it for a hi torq mini starter which fits fine but will not engage with the flywheel.I have tried without shims an with 1 to 4 shims but still no go.Im not sure if it,s the travel of the starter cog not reaching the flywheel properly?Im lost for idea,s anyone else had this problem? |

I'm having a bad day with starters too, so i feel your pain! Is it not reaching out far enough? Have you been able to pull out the tooth gear with a screwdriver? It should engage about 3/4 across the flywheel. How far is it going? |

Unfortunatley I cant see much of the back of the starter as the adapter plate between engine an gearbox is in the way.I am going to try putting half shims on the outside bolt to try an make the motor closer to the flywheel.I looked at the real steel book and they say you can use this method so this will be my last attempt.

I exchanged the mini starter for another adjustable (4 bolt positions + body could adjust) mini torque starter. It lined up perfect and works fine so back on the road. |
