Post subject:  Miss fire under load

hi all,
Well today the car has developed a misfire under load :x its that bad I get pop backs in the exhaust.
Before I start off a bit of engine info will help. 327 standard engine with an edelbrock carb and HEI ignition.
A few weeks back I stripped and cleaned the carb, so my initial thoughts was "what have I done wrong", I have stripped the carb down again and nothing is wrong there.
My next move was to the dizzy, pulled it out the car and checked the coil resistance and all other stuff I could, nothing wrong there either.
I still need to check plug wire resistance which I will do in the morning.

Has anyone had this or can anyone think of something I might need to check?

Thanks in advance

Might be worth checking your vacuum advance is working correctly .
Or sometimes the electrics in the HEI can start to fail and give strange symptoms before they fail ...
the cap on the HEI can also cause trouble, check the condition of the pick ups inside and if the is any doubt buy a new cap, sometimes an easy fix.
Has the HEI position slipped ? Could be a timing issue .
GOOD LUCK

I could not wait till tomorrow to check the plug wires so decided to run in the garage and check them.

I am getting a lot of different reading of them so it might be time for some new leads. I don't think this will fix the problem but they need doing any way so might as well

Update.

I have found a good deal on a complete dizzy with cap, rotor and leads here in Germany so I have gone for that. The reason I have done this is having some spares cannot hurt.

New spark plug leads and distributed and the car is running better then it ever has.
Now that the engine is running sweet I have noticed the fuel pump making a noise, now this raises a question should it be that noisy.
Is it normal to hear the fuel pump?

I don't think you should hear the fuel pump at all on a small block.. it's a relatively cheap part so worth replacing...

Do you have an aftermarket electric fuel pump, or is it the stock mechanical one?

If it's electric then usually you can hear them when the ignition is on (but not the engine). My '79 has an aftermarket electric pump and you can hear it. My '87 has a stock electric one and you can also hear it.

If it's mechanical, then as Stu says, shouldn't be able to and luckily it's a relatively inexpensive piece to change out. Keep us updated, glad to hear it's running well after the recent service you did

Standard mechanical fuel pump fitted to this old girl, she is an old fashioned girl that likes the simple life ;)
Another cost :o
The wife is going to kill me as I have spent a lot the last couple of months.
Oh well time to find a fuel pump
Does anyone have any suppliers in the uk so I can cross check with the prices here?

When buying parts for cars always remember this--- it's always easier to seek forgiveness than permission

Real steel in Uxbridge would sell them
