Post subject:  fitting and wiring up a cigarette lighter

Hey :) im wanting to fit a cigarette lighter/power socket in the front ashtray,

my car now has no wires at all going to it but what looks like a lock barrel in it? not sure what it is but ive bought a retainer and Receptacle, what else is needed if anything? and how is it connected up? the Receptacle has like a prong on the end?

I can only guess that the lock barrel is some kind of anti-theft idea as it looks like an ignition lock barrel. As for the power socket, the body is the earth and the prong is the 12v power connection. Depends if you want to wire so it's live all the time (without ignition) or only when the ignition is on (and/or accessory position) as to where you pick up the live from. HTH

I have a set of gauges where the radio was so could I just take a 12v ignition. Feed from that and connect it to the. Prong on the receptacle? Where bouts is the earth connected to?

You should be OK taking the power from there, I guess that would be switched by the ignition? Earth is via the part itself, so once you fit the receptacle to the ashtray housing and refit the ashtray to the dash, it will earth through the metal parts of the car, which is connected to the negative side of the battery to complete the circuit.
