Yes & No, how's that for an answer? The reason you would want to warm the arch up is to help soften the paint to stop it cracking, not to soften the metal. Try to soften the metal & the paint will blister. I'd mask up the paintwork with a few layers of masking tape, just in case you miss the target, & then gently tap the arch from end to end with a panel hammer, repeating the process until the arch is where you want it.. Alternatively, use a bit of flat soft wood between the hammer & the arch & again, gently, gently tap it into place. I've done this a few times on upmarket cars & can't emphasize on doing it a bit at a time. If you take your time it should be ok, unless there's filler in the arch in which case it will crack. Be prepared for the fact that you might have to repair the 1/4's & paint the arch though. You're better off getting the right size back spacing on the wheels & fitting the right tyres tbh You can buy a tool for doing this, but it's finding someone that'll lend it to you.hth. cheers Nige |

cheers Nige..... we did a bit then the paint started to crack (stevie wonder and ray charles painted the car back in the states after 10 cans of super tenants each and the paint chips if you sneeze on it) on the wheels I measured from the rear hubs back to the shock mounts and is 4"3/4 so is 4"1/2 back spacing ok ???? want to put 18"x8" on the rear and have 14"x8" with 3"3/8 b/s on at the moment ...can i get 255 on a 8" rim ok ???? probably go for these as they are the only ones available in 17" and 18" that are cheapish

Always a problem when trying to fit wheels that are just too big. Been there, done that many times as Nigel can attest. Now I only use wheels/tyres that fit and work and guess what? ALL the problems have disappeared! I still have to fight with customers who want more tyre/wheel than their car can take, can't be done. Cheers, Martin |

I agree- much better getting wheels that fit! Camaro Wheels Classic Industries produce a 15X 8" rally wheel with 4.5" backspacing-this enables the wheels to fit all Camaros 67-72, Chevelle 64-72 and Nova 64-72 The original came with 4" backspacing Global West recommend the following: 67-69 Camaro 16 X 8" wheel with 5" backspacing in conjunction with 245x50 x 16 tyres Friend Runs 8.5" X 16 Image wheels with 4" backspacing I have a set of 10x15 new unused Revolutions that will not fit Butch because it is lowered! In extremis we have used the trolley handle to splay the wheelarch slightly rolling it under the arch over the tyre! (After an accident). I am pretty sure a set of 275 50 15 will fit the back (on 8x15) no idea if these will fit the front! Will find out before September! Certainly 255 60 15 will fit on the above wheels - you need 4.5 inch backspacing |
